| Knowing Better+ Doing Better | . I crafted my first soap in the mid 1990's on the North Shore of Lake Superior. A summer or two later, when I set out to name my new eucalyptus-mint bar soap, I wanted to honor the place where my foray into soapmaking began. I chose the name Gitchigumee–the Ojibwe name for Lake Superior. . And for nearly 20 years, I never once questioned my choice of name. . Until now. . Last week, a friend renamed a yarn she creates that carried a name of another indigenous people. Reading her decision around renaming her yarn hit me in a sudden wave. It was the realization that I, too, had made a mistake that needed righting. . Because in my clumsy attempt to honor a place, I ended up dishonoring a people. . This name was never mine to give. It belongs to the Ojibwe; the Anishinaabe; those whose lands I occupied the year I learned to make soap. And I regret that my word choice may have caused grief or done harm. . Our words have power, and we can do better. With that intention, Gitchigumee Soap will now be know as North Shore, honoring the lake without appropriating language, and with heartfelt apologies for past harm. . When we know better we can do better—building a kinder, more conscious world one small change at a time. ✨✨✨✨✨✨ Beginning today, 15% of the profits from every bar of North Shore will be donated to organizations supporting the Ojibwe/Anishinaabe communities in the great lakes region.
