Born 23 weeks at birth, weighing 1lb 5oz. He spent 252 days in the Nicu. I had a normal pregnancy and out of nowhere at 22 weeks and 2 days I began having contractions, I went to the ER and they sent me home, I ended up going back not even 24 hours later only this time my water was broke and I found out I was 3 centimeters dilated. They tried every medication to stop labor and told me if he made it to Sunday which would make him 23 weeks he would have a better possibility at being saved. He waited until 12:17 p.m Sunday and made his grand arrival. I found out it he was delivered early due to an infection I spoke about the Friday before at my normal prenatal check up, in which the swab was never tested, ladies stay on top of these doctors, But he is now 3 months shy of 2. Off of the ventilator 24/7, weighing 22lbs 7.8 oz he is due for reconstruction of the airway surgery September 5th and god willing on his way to being #TRACHFREE! Prayer works!! You just have to believe!! •

"We’ve joined a fraternity of NICU parents, a club we never thought of before, but now can never forget. We’re so happy our son is leaving, but our hearts hang heavy for those we left behind." After 3 weeks in the NICU, Danielle Fishel brings her baby home!
How did you feel when your little one came home? Did you connect with other parents while in the NICU? Tell us your #unspokenstories in the comments below and at unspokenstories.org.
AUGUST 19, 2015- DAY 32 of the NICU
-
This moment is so special to us as it was Daddy’s first time holding our tiny little miracle. The first few weeks were touch and go, and he wasn’t stable enough to be held.
-
We both longed to hold him, but knew it was important for him to rest and not cause too much stimulation. And per the hospital’s policy, Jaxson had to be extubated before being participatijf in kangaroo care.
-
So while the wait was long, it was well worth it as he did so well with his first kangaroo care time with Daddy! He maintained his saturation levels for almost 2 hours and gave us the peace sign to let us know he was good!
Happy #TINYTOESTUESDAY
You guys picked it- Well SORTA it was a TIE so I’ll break the tiebreaker! Today’s topic is CAR SEAT TESTING/ HIGH ALTITUDE SIMULATION TEST!
Does anyone know why we do Car seat Testing? Or HAST testing? .
• A car seat test is done on infants born prematurely before 37 weeks of life to see whether or not the baby will be able to sit in a car seat safely without any episodes of apnea, bradycardia or desaturation episodes. .
•There are 2 types of car seats for infants: infant carrier (with handle) and convertible car seat (rear facing) whichever one you choose make pick one that will fit a small infant. .
•If your infant doesn’t fit, us RNs can show parents how to position blanket rolls around the infant to make sure their safe. But make sure you o my use them if we show you how and it’s directed for you to do so.
•How we do the test: 90min-3 hours based on each facility, we place the infant in your car seat and monitor the vital signs during that time to see if the baby has any episodes of apnea, bradycardia or desaturations. If so, your baby May need to grow a little bugger before going home. .
•Things to consider: baby MUST be off oxygen and no feeding tube present before this test can be conducted!! .
• **See the American Academy of Pediatrics for the current child safety law policy** .
High Altitude Simulation Test or HAST test is a test to determine if you need supplemental oxygen when you fly on a airplane or go to higher altitude. *standard order is 8k feet altitude* .
•Families who live overseas/ different countries should get their babies tested before they leave to ensure their safety on the flight. Infants with respiratory needs after birth will be required to be tested before travel.

#Exhausted and clearly #nofilter. Thank you, #Marchofdimes, for encouraging all of us to voice our #unspokenstories in honor of #Mothersday. I know there will be a lot of (much appreciated!) gratitude for mothers making it all look easy in the next few days, along with gorgeous pictures of them and their thriving children. But my unspoken story is a confession: Last night i was up at 1am trying to shove ice into a bottle in the dark to make the water cold enough to trick Odie into thinking it was milk in order to get him to stop screaming. At 2:45am Gus’s flashlight fell on the floor and he wanted it in order to go back to sleep and I frantically felt around in the dark, tripping over Duplos to try to find it. I had to turn on the lights to get him to stop crying, risking waking the 2 year old who he shares a room with, to get him to stop screaming. He did, and fell asleep. …Till 4am when he had a nightmare and I held him for 30 mins till he fell asleep again. At 5am Odie woke up screaming and I didnt want him to wake up Gus, so I brought him to the living room and sat with him for 15 minutess till he fell asleep in my arms and I put him in the pack n play. Both kids woke up at 6:10, ready to play and have cereal. This was a normal night. My #unspokenstory is that I am chronically exhausted. And it’s ok, I feel lucky to have two beautiful boys. I’m astonished at how fast and efficiently my brain works, despite the lack of rest. I have never been so on my professional game. But I don’t talk about how I have been tired for four and half years. I don’t talk about it because I don’t want to seem whiny or weak or ungrateful. And, again, I’m ok, I have no regrets, and I love my kids, BUT ALSO, if one more person tells me that this is the best time of my life and that I will miss this time, I’m gonna tell them to shut it. This is my #unspokenstory. I want to hear yours. What are you afraid to talk about? You can tell me. I’ll listen. If we’re all going to do this social media thing, let’s use it to find some camaraderie. I’m here for you. Thank you for being here for me.
