Another winner for the best common name? The hula skirt siphonophore, Physophora hydrostatica.⁠ ⁠ Siphonophores are colonial animals, composed of many physiologically integrated parts, called zooids. The zooids are structurally similar to other solitary animals, but they are attached to each other rather than living independently. The finger-like zooids, colored with beautiful tinges of orange and violet, attach at the base of the swimming bells and house relatively potent nematocysts (stinging cells) that can impart a strong sting to a potential predator or unsuspecting prey.
