I couldn’t resist using the @geekykids_au Rainbow Rice again today. This time I created a Maths and fine motor learning experience that could provide opportunities for; number matching number recognition counting and using one to one correspondence ordering numbers from 1-10 (smallest to largest) ordering numbers from 10-1 (largest to smallest) addition and subtraction sharing (grouping or multiplication)

Graphing Cars I left this grid out on the mat next to Ralph’s cars. At first, he was excited to use it as a car park and randomly assigned his cars parking spaces. After a while I joined in his play and drove the cars into the correct column for their colour while saying things like ‘I’m a red car, I’ll take the first red spot’, ‘I want to be the second red car’. He soon picked up what I was modelling and then I sat back and let him continue. I asked him which colour car he thought he had the most of and he looked at his pile and initially guessed yellow. He loved the idea of it being a competition between the colours and got excited every time one colour got a longer line than another. At the end of the play he announced that red was the winner and he awarded them a trophy. While he was sitting back and admiring his work I asked him which colour car he had the most of, and he could tell me it was the red. When I asked him which he had the least of he just guessed a colour and didn’t understand. I asked him which type of car he had the smallest number of and he could tell me, so we linked this idea with the word ‘least’ that was new to him. We used lots of maths language in this activity; most, least, more, less, tallest, shortest, add, column, row, graph, first, second etc. We counted the cars in each column, and then I showed him how he could read the number of cars from the axis instead of having to count. He then shouted out colours to me and told me to read the number as quickly as I could, this was a great way for me to model how the graph worked and he grasped the idea quickly. I then asked him to find the first blue car, the third yellow car etc which was more difficult for him. I made a mental note to use this language more in every day life. Ralph enjoyed this game and we’ll definitely do it again. The exploring he’s doing now through play means he’s likely to approach graphing positively when he comes across it, and will hopefully recognise why it’s valuable for him to do! #mathsonmondays #numeracy #mathsskills #earlymath #preschoolactivities #mathsactivities #invitationtolearn #graphs #pictogram #homeed #homeeducation

NUMBER AND COUNTING PLAY . I set up this number and counting invitation to play today. We have so many stairs in our apartment and we count them several times a day I say 1 and now Mr 1.4 says 2. I used our 10 frame, tracing numbers, number dots, a DIY pom pom push, and a range of loose parts. We traced our tracing letters, filled them with buttons and used our number dots and buttons on our ten frame. . Using these hands on experiences will help Ari make a connection between number quantities and number symbols. Of course at the moment Ari is just having fun exploring these concepts. . He posted so many pom poms through his cup, counted them as he pushed them through the hole and pointed to the number dots to make a connection to the number symbol. See my stories . These number resources are great, however they are not essential for developing fun educational experiences. Making your own number symbols, and using what you have around the house to represent quantity would be just as beneficial . #earlyyears #earlyyearsmaths #learningnumbers #learningquantities #counting #numberecognition #learningthroughplay #toddlerplay #playislearning #preschoolactivities #openendedplay #loosepartsplay #playislearning #woodenresources #earlychildhoodeducation #earlylearning #playbasedlearning #earlylearning101 #numberinvitation #invitationtoplay #learningthroughplaying #montessoriathome #numerals #mathsskills #toddlermaths #stayathomemum #teachermum

One of our new products launching very soon is our ten frame. A tens frame is a simple and fantastic resource for teaching your child about the value of numbers, developing their counting skills and that 1:1 correspondence and helping them to develop a visual of a number which will in turn help with their mental maths. Maths in the Early Years Foundation Stage and in the National Curriculum is encouraging children to develop a deeper understanding of number, encouraging greater depth thinking. It’s teaching them to not just be able to solve a problem but to be able to explain how they did it. It’s also encouraging them to make connections with number facts they know. I will be sharing some activities we did with our ten frame and also some examples of questions that will encourage that greater depth understanding of number.

☀️Number Jump☀️ I very nearly put these mats in the other week and I’m so glad I didn’t. Despite looking a bit dirty we’ve had lots of fun with them. I wrote the number 1-9 on them and as I called out a number she had to jump on it. She then took on my roll and shouted out the numbers. She really enjoyed choosing numbers that were really far apart. You could do so much with this. They could order them, you could set up an obstacle course and include them or use them for hopscotch. Lots of uses from something that nearly went in the bin! Are you playing out in the glorious sunshine today . . . . #pahmplayoutside #outdoorplay #play #spring #gardenactivities #playoutside #greatoutdoors #pahmmaths #mathsonmondays #maths #mathsskills #preschoolmaths #playeveryday #physicaldevelopment #playathome #freshair #activemaths

Compound Play ⏱ This is a term I use where an activity combines a very broad spectrum of skills, experiences and learning opportunities. Today we made Valentine’s inspired biscuits. For Annie this was play. Making the flour ‘snow’, mixing, breaking eggs, exploring how the colour changed when added to icing. She used an electric whisk (supported obviously), electric scales, the timer on the oven. She explored temperature as the dough was chilled then baked. I always save a bit of dough for her to play with whilst she waits for the cooking/cooling- an amazing finger work out and creative opportunity. I could ramble on and on about other learning opportunities and life skills but I think you get the gist Baking with children is messy but it’s one of the best examples of ‘compound play’ there is Just for reference, I use the word compound as I always remember the trainer at the gym going on about compound exercises- combing things to do more in one go!! #compoundplay #learningopportunity #playislearning #bakingwithkids #playbaking #bakingfun #kidsbake #kidswhobake #heartbiscuits #valentinesbaking #sprinkles #mathsskills #practicallearning #handsonlearning #lifeskills #sensoryplay #doughplay
