Blue for ME ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I have Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome; a long-term, invisible illness. It affects an estimated 250,000 people in the UK and around 17 million people worldwide and there is currently no cure/treatment for it and little research surrounding it. People with ME/CFS experience severe, persistent fatigue and their body finds it hard to recover even after using small amounts of energy, which can lead to their symptoms flaring up. Symptoms can include extreme tiredness/fatigue/exhaustion, sleep problems, muscle/joint pain, sore throat, poor concentration, dizziness, nausea. It is something that you have to learn to live with; you learn how to pace yourself, you learn what your limit is and you make sure that (when you are doing something) you don’t use up all your energy. It effects you physically, mentally and emotionally. This condition is different for everyone who has it: not everyone will experience the same symptoms, and not everyone has it for the same amount of time – it varies from person to person, and not everyone suffers to the same degree. ME can be categorised into three different levels: •Mild - they are mobile, can care for themselves, can do light domestic tasks with difficulty and most are still working or in education, but often take days off, or use the weekend to cope with the rest of the week. •Moderate - they have reduced mobility, are restricted in all activities of daily living, have usually stopped work, school or college and need rest periods, throughout the day. •Severe - they are unable to do any activity for themselves or can only carry out minimal daily tasks, they have severe cognitive difficulties and depend on a wheelchair for mobility and are often unable to leave the house (or if they do they have a severe and prolonged after-effect). They may also spend most of their time in bed, and are often extremely sensitive to light and noise.
