The magnificent lifts at the Manchester Unity Building beautifully captured by @thecitygrammer
The Manchester Unity Building on the corner of Collins & Swanson Streets was designed by architect Marcus Barlow and constructed in 1932. It took only 8 months to build with construction continuing 24hrs a day. The project gave the local economy a much needed boost during the depression-era, generating jobs at the time. Upon completion many small businesses moved in, milliners, high-end fashion designers, artists, jewellers and beauticians to name a few. Even during difficult times, the majestic Manchester Unity Building inspired creative individuals to open their businesses inside the Art Deco building.
Art Deco was a style initiated by the French in 1925 and reimagined by Marcus Barlow when designing Manchester Unity. Using geometric and Aztec shapes of gold, black, white and cream colours in structured styles. The beauty of the building seemed to attract these designers in 1932, capturing their imagination and quickly becoming a symbol for economic recovery.
On the 12th floor there was a rooftop garden café fitted with a fountain, pond & Japanese palms, and the basement served as a tea room & café.

It was so exciting to have a visit behind the scenes @melbournemuseum today with expert entomologist Ken Walker! We're working together on a display for the #worldofthebook exhibition about a 19th-c collector - the Comte de Castlenau - who donated his books to @library_vic and his beetle specimens to @melbournemuseum, which were in the same building together at that stage. I don't want to spoil the fun by revealing the story too soon, so stay tuned for the display later this year P.S. I got to meet live bugs too - the Lord Howe stick insect, famously brought back from the very brink of extinction by our museum colleagues here in Melbourne - they do such amazing work I wish we were still together in one building! But we're together in spirit (and actually quite close geographically still!!)

We are saddened by the loss of the vivacious artist and champion Mirka Mora.
When Mirka Mora and her husband Georges burst onto the Melbourne scene in 1951, they brought their French culture and bohemianism to a postwar city ready for new energy. The pair opened Mirka Café in 1954, followed by Café Balzac in 1958 and Tolarno Restaurant and Galleries in 1965. The Moras’ restaurants, as well as their home and studio at the ‘Paris end’ of Collins Street, were great meeting places for Melbourne’s bohemians, including artists Charles Blackman, Fred Williams, Joy Hester, Sidney Nolan and Arthur Boyd.
An indelible talent, Mirka made her colourful mark on Melbourne – her whimsical characters still fill the walls at Tolarno and welcome visitors to Flinders Street Station. Her work incorporated painting, mosaic, soft sculptures and dolls, as seen in these portraits of Mirka in her studio, taken by Rennie Ellis in 1985. ( H2011.2/821)
She will be remembered for her creativity, vitality and fierce curiosity.

Trams and cable cars have been rattling down Gertrude Street and around the corner into Smith Street since the 1880s. Gertrude Street has some of Melbourne's oldest surviving terrace houses and Smith Street was the city's first suburban shopping strip. Today, the two streets have a distinctive mix of businesses, offering social services, cultural experiences and boutique shopping. The corner billboard site is a small common, with seating and shrubs. Mike Brown's painting Corner Smith and Gertrude Street captures the streetscape of Collingwood.

Melbourne’s cultural and hospitality destination for over 100 years, every building in St Kilda tells a story. Opened in 1939, the St Moritz ice skating rink was one of the area’s grandest icons. Soon, a reimagined Saint Moritz will live on in St Kilda once more.
