Breakups are painful. Although losing a relationship is hard for anyone, there are deeper, more complex reasons certain people become stuck in their pain and suffer more than others. A rejection can trigger a painful reminder of past hurts and a violent assault on one’s sense of self, neither of which have much to do with the partner a person has lost. If people are uncomfortable with your sensitivity, it is a reflection on them - not you. Something so interesting I’ve learnt about lately is the ‘shadow self’. It’s when people hide away certain aspects of themselves or their personality. Maybe as a kid they were told it was bad. Maybe they were criticised for it as an adult. Whatever the reason, it means when they see that same thing in you, they will react negatively to it. It’s subconsciously uncomfortable and painful for them to see someone else expressing what they have to suppress. I’m sharing this because I think it will be helpful for some of us to remember when we’re criticised simply for being ourselves. It is truly a reflection of the other person’s pain - and not a reflection on who you are. Keep showing up as yourself regardless. And most importantly, try your absolute best not to internalise the criticisms of others. The world needs you to be who you TRULY are, not a diluted version of it
