A fashion illustration for the spring/summer of 1939 published , together with some other plates, on a Catalogue by Bell’s Fashion Bureau, London. In it we can admire a three piece grey striped suit , with a single breasted peak lapel two button ventless jacket , that can be considered in a man’s wardrobe as the quintessential cloth for town day and business wear. Every detail appears perfect: the waist suppression , the high armhole , the shoulder line , the breast pocket positioning and the jacket length. This kind of suit was loved and regularly sported by the British politician Robert Anthony Eden, 1st Earl of Avon,( 1897 – 1977) who was used to pair it not with a bowler (like in the image) but with a felt Homburg , thus making in the ‘30s this type of hat very popular among british politicians and diplomats. For this reason in Great Britain the Homburg hat has also been since then referred to as “ Eden hat”. This fashion illustration was one of the tables published in 1950 on a Catalogue of the Swedish Firm Ahlen & Holm, a Society which has been operating since 1899 in the fields of fashion , beauty , interior design and furniture through a great chain of shops located both in Sweden and Norway. The observation of this image, showing two flannel chalk striped suits, allows some sartorially interesting considerations. The blue suit , in a 4x2 double breasted configuration, appears much less dated than the three button single breasted grey one as the jacket of the latter has the notch lapel ( I.e the point where the suit coat collar and lapel join each other ) positioned too low , when considering the actual tailoring style and taste. I have made the same considerations also for my personal wardrobe where there are single and double breasted jackets made about thirty years ago , still wearable by me as fortunately in this period I have not gained weight. Indeed , I sport more willingly the double breasted coats as for the above reasons they appear much less outdated.
