What fun we had at the Museum last Saturday pouring over vintage borders, ornaments and type in this newly donated galley cabinet. . Made by Hamilton, the cabinet comes with an interesting provenance. A similar cabinet shown in ATF’s 1906 “American Line Type Book” dates it to the early 20th century. The story picks up again on February 16, 1980 when it was purchased by our Museum supporter at a Rhode Island shop for the value of the lead. A restorer removed black paint, repaired damage from a fire and some rot at the base. Three wood galleys that had already been sold were recovered (sans type). For the past 39 years, the cabinet and contents have been carefully used and cared for by this printing family on the Cape.
