Happy National Purebred Dog Day. I didn’t know this was a thing. I was aware of World Pangolin Day, World Tapir Day, and a number of others, but not the day for the animal I actually own and live with.
The Xoloitzcuintli (also spelled Xoloitzcuintle) is over 3,000 years old and are thought to appear in the writings of Christopher Columbus. It was one of the first breeds recognized by the AKC (American Kennel Club) as the Mexican Hairless, but was dropped in 1959 because of low numbers. Many thought they were extinct. It was recognized a second time in 2011. The breed is named after the dog-headed Aztec god of lightning and death, Xolotl, twin brother of Quetzalcoatl. ‘Itzcuintli’ is the Aztec word for dog. ‘Xolotl’s Dog’ was made by Xolotl himself to guide the dead through Mictlán, the Underworld. They were guardians, living hot water bottles, and a food source.
When I was waiting to get a Xolo, the other Xolo people warned me that this breed is different. They told me stories. These dogs are smarter. They’re problem solvers. They’re always one step ahead of the other dogs in the house. I listened, but I thought they were glorifying their beloved breed the way we all do. They were not. They were being modest. This dog blows me away with his beautiful brain every day. I’ve owned a number of different breeds and Iorveth stands head and shoulders above the rest. It’s more like living with a human child than a dog. He picks up new things in seconds. Show him what you want once and he’s pretty much got it. He figures out most of his own problems. We avoid showing him certain things (like how the screen door latch works) because he would let himself out. He vocabulary is huge and not always in a good way because he picks up words from conversations he’s not even part of.
They are not an easy breed and without my Xolo friends, I might have been in over my head, but because I knew what to expect with the aloofness to strangers, the constant need to be thinking, the problem solving, the high energy, the intense prey drive, and every other thing a lot of people see as downsides, I ended up with the best dog who has ever or will ever set foot on this planet.
