#MichalHasek - s/t // Naja Records // CND first pressing 1974 ... This record found me in the most organic way possible and has been getting a great deal of play since finding it a while back... it's really something special to me. The first thing that caught my eye while digging was the hand-drawn cover art, often the calling card of the private press. I flipped it over to see that Tony Kosinec (fantastic Canadian artist if you don't happen to know him) is on tablas as well as Ian Guenther (of Fraser & Debolt fame) on fiddle. Drop the needle and the album just got better and better. Psych folk w/ steel guitar and bone slide, harmonica, M/F harmonies, cello and sax... tasty stuff indeed. The songs are a bit all over the map but somehow manage to come back around and fit together like a puzzle. A really beautiful puzzle. Michal has a rich baritone that resonates in my brain. His take on Wiffen's "More Often Than Not" is transformative. I can count few covers that surpass the original and in my opinion Michal more than makes it his own. "Naja" is a phased out and beautiful instrumental (those two tracks were his first single and Naja is what I've uploaded a sample of here if you swipe left). Two versions of the cover exist... the one shown here were the first 1000 pressed w/ a loan from Hasek's mother and some friends. It came w/ an insert featuring an image of Michal shot by Calgary photographer David Brown and the liner notes on the reverse. There also exists another version that has "Michal Hasek" across the front and the liner notes/credits on the back cover w/ no insert. It was manufactured and distributed by A&M Records Of Canada after president Jerry LaCorsier was persuaded by a warehouse worker that it was worth his attention.
This album is distinctly Canadian in all the best ways possible and is another well deserved #CanadianPsych entry into the #AcidArchives. DIG IT.

Michal did a small run of his s/t album on CD and brought me some to distribute to you guys and gals. He calls it Naja 1+ as it has the original 10 songs from the '74 LP as well as an additional 9 tracks... songs that didn't make the album, a few live tracks, an earlier version of a song that ended up on his 2nd LP Radio Play and a Taj Mahal cover. The OG album has a positive review in #AcidArchives and contains one of my favorite covers ever, Wiffen's More Often Than Not. Its a beautiful album and wonderfully Canadian. Check out my write up a few posts back w/ a sound clip of the phased of #Naja if you'd like a bit more info.
If you're interested in a copy of the CD... comment here or DM w/ your email address and I'll send an invoice. In true hippie fashion, Michal isn't interested in much of a return here so we're asking $15CND shipped within Canada and $15USD shipped to US. Anyone outside Canada/US can just message me for a shipping quote... would be more than happy to send it to ya.
