So let’s say you plan to sit and meditate for 20 minutes and halfway through, the doorbell rings. It’s a delivery. . Firstly, don’t stress. Everything that happens during meditation is a part of it. Take a breath and then head to the door mindfully, still feeling the breath. . Do not get angry or annoyed. This interruption is to be dealt with in exactly the same way as we deal with thoughts. That means with kindness, compassion and nonchalance. Remember, what you practice grows stronger so the emotions you continually access in meditation will be the ones that show up in your daily life. If you want to experience less anger and frustration in daily life, don’t indulge those emotions during meditation. . Don’t think the session is ruined. It’s not. Once you get good at meditating you can do it anywhere and despite any disturbance. I regularly meditate on the London Underground and it works great! . Open the door and take the package quickly, put it down and head straight back to the meditation spot. Settle in and continue. There’s no need to look at the clock and add time or change the timer, if that’s what you use. . You’ll be amazed at how quickly you’re back in the zone if you don’t let your mind get wrapped up in annoyance at the intrusion. . There’s no need to add extra time on for a disturbance like this at the end unless you really want to. The meditation went just fine. Small disturbances like this are no problem. . Remember that every session will be different. Some will be bliss, others will be uncomfortable. It is completely irrelevant. If you have the correct technique, the body and mind has the experience it needs at the time. Just accept whatever happens. . I think everyone wants to know their “right” path in life. But I believe that before we can choose which way to go, it’s important that we understand who we are. We all carry a story about who we think we are, what we can do, what we cannot do and how we should live our lives to be happy and successful. A story that we have built up unconsciously all our lives that includes many comments from our parents, teachers, friends, colleagues, partners, TV, social media and the society we grew up in. If you want to find your own path, you will need to challenge these beliefs and be curious about where they came from, who you learnt them from and why you believe them to be true. 〰️ To get started, you could ask yourself these questions: What beliefs do I hold about myself that isn’t coming from me? What behavioral patterns do I fall into that doesn’t feel like me? What beliefs do I not want to hold on to anymore? 〰️ If you find that parts of the story you have been carrying no longer reflect who you are, you need to let those beliefs go so you can change and grow towards your own path, the one that feels right to you. When you have understood who you are, I believe you have found your path because you have found what makes you YOU, not who you think others say you are. And you will see your path is becoming more and more illuminated right in front of your eyes. But be patient You can’t change everything at the same time but you can start right now changing one thing.

Comment below - something you’re trying or want to try, that you’ll probably be bad at. I have a lot of really cool and wise friends. A few weeks ago, I heard one of them giving people tips on how to learn to get up the warped wall at our gym, and he said, “You have to learn how to fail”. He was showing people how to start running up the wall and then slide back down safely if they didn’t make it up. He had them fail on purpose so they could learn how to be bad at it. The fun(?) part of being friends with me is that I rarely take things at face value and instead find a way to make them about how we live our lives in general (that’s so fun, right?!) Being bad at something used to be my ultimate fear. Grad school cured me of this quickly - recording all of my sessions and then getting detailed feedback in group supervision was, at first, my worst nightmare. Eventually, it became my favourite part of learning. There was something in owning my mistakes, rather than trying to hide them, that was both liberating and healing. I learned how to fail. It’s still hard for me. My thoughts still tell me that people are going to leave, are going to think I’m less than, if I make any small mistake. I still have moments when I realize I’m holding myself to a higher standard than I would ever hold any other human to. Then I let that part go, and I do the things anyways (often, badly). I‘ve learned that when I do mess up, so long as I own it and try to fix it, people don’t leave; in fact, they move closer, the connection deepens. There is something so much more real and genuine in non-perfection.
