Next time you think “I’m angry”, catch yourself and say it again, but change it to “this mind is angry.”.

This small change creates distance between you (the observer) and the emotion (the observed). This change should instantly turn down the intensity of the situation and works for any emotion, not just anger.

When you implement this simple change, you switch from being the embodiment of the emotion, to being the witness of the emotion.

This distance brings a new perspective where emotions can more easily be seen as passing phases of the mind and not as an intrinsic part of your being.

It works for any emotion. You can turn up the intensity of a positive emotion by reversing the process.

Meditation and mindfulness are not ways to suppress our true emotions.

Even the Dalai Lama gets annoyed from time to time. In his own words: “You never stop getting angry about small things. In my case, it's when my staff do something carelessly, then my voice goes high. But after a few minutes, it passes.”.

These emotions are coded into us through evolution and are not inherently bad.
.
Meditation and mindfulness won’t remove negative emotions completely, but they can help us regulate them.
.
A regular meditation practice enables us to see the workings of our mind more clearly. As a result we can catch our thoughts before they turn into actions and therefore we can express ourselves from a wiser place.
.
Meditation helps ease negative emotions in a physical way too. By constantly releasing stress from the body, our tolerance for problems becomes much higher and we’re less prone to anger and frustration.
.
The health benefits of this are huge! Since we’re keeping our system in a low stress state, we have fewer harmful hormones (like cortisol) entering our bloodstream.
.
There is evidence to show that an abundance of stress hormones in our system can cause inflammation and other health complications, so stress management is essential for a long term healthy lifestyle.

Did you know that our mind can become addicted to certain emotions and feelings For example, if we are always focused on drama then our mind will LITERALLY search and crave to find those emotions from ANY situation we find ourselves in, because it is addicted to that feeling.
The same goes for focusing on the negative, being the victim, stress, helplessness etc.
Without even realizing it we can be making our lives more miserable by searching for the worst from each situation we find ourselves in!
Crazy right?!

Here is the best part though...
We can also use this same addiction to our advantage
What if we trained our minds to become addicted to seeing the positive in each situation? What if we trained our minds to look for how we can learn from set backs or take ownership for our own failures?
What if we trained our minds to become addicted to the good things?!
.
Just like our muscles have to be trained to become stronger, same goes for our minds.
As we go throughout the rest of this week I challenge you to join me in pondering and assessing these two questions:
1)What’s one thing you can do this week to improve your mindset?
2)What kind of emotion is your brain addicted to finding in each situation?
Is it positive or negative?
