Happy #moleculemonday presented by @ministryofchemistry ! ・・・ #Silicondioxide, also known as #silica, #silicicacid or silicic acid anydride is an oxide of #silicon with the chemical formula #SiO2, most commonly found in nature as #quartz and in various living organisms. In many parts of the world, silica is the major constituent of #sand. Silica is one of the most complex and most abundant families of materials, existing as a compound of several minerals and as synthetic product. Notable examples include fused quartz, fumed silica, silica gel, and aerogels. It is used in structural materials, microelectronics (as an electrical insulator), and as components in the food and pharmaceutical industries. Inhaling finely divided crystalline silica is toxic and can lead to severe inflammation of the lung tissue, silicosis, bronchitis, lung cancer, and systemic autoimmune diseases, such as lupus and rheumatoid arthritis. A very small turbine? Happy #moleculemonday presented by @ministryofchemistry !! ・・・ #Triptycene is an aromatic hydrocarbon, the simplest #iptycene molecule with the formula C2H2(C6H4)3. It is a white solid that is soluble in organic solvents. The compound has a #paddle-#wheel configuration with #D3h symmetry. It is named after the medieval three-piece art panel, the #triptych. Several substituted triptycenes are known. The hydrocarbon framework is very rigid and triptycene derivatives such as triptycene quinones are therefore incorporated in many organic compounds as a molecular scaffold for various applications, such as #molecular #motors or #ligands. Happy #moleculemonday !! Repost @sintesistotal ・・・ TAXOL Isolated from the Pacific Yew, this poly-oxygenated diterpenoid was the target of a competitive synthetic “marathon” in the early 1990s. Around 30 research groups ran against the clock for the prize of being the first to publish this complex molecule’s total synthesis, which ended in a “photo finish” in 1994 with the Holton group’s synthesis being the first accepted article while Nicolau’s group was the first published total synthesis. This caused enormous controversy, as each group claimed their synthesis to be superior over the other group’s, despite utilizing completely different strategies. Paclitaxel’s biosynthetic pathway involves around 20 enzymatic steps and has yet to be fully elucidated. However, it is known that the starting compound is geranylgeranyl diphosphate, a dimer of the monoterpenoid alcohol geraniol. The pathway goes through a ring-closing of taxadiene to taxusin, a transformation that is infeasible in the laboratory in terms of stereochemical control. Additionally, naturally-occurring enzymes such as cytochrome P450 are much more efficient at selectively controlling hydrocarbon skeleton oxidation than modern synthetic methodology, causing a biomimetic total synthesis to be currently impossible. What aspects of the total syntheses are you curious about? #labscience #organicchemistry #organicchemistrylab #molecula #chemlab #chemistry #quimica #quimicaorganica #sintesis #synthesis #sintesistotal #totalsynthesis #laboratory #science #sciencerules #naturalproducts #nature #stereoselective #catalysis #organica #1 #scienceporn #sciences #chem #gradschool

Happy #moleculemonday guys!! #Glucose (also called #dextrose) is a simple #sugar with the #molecular formula #C6H12O6. Glucose is the most abundant #monosaccharide, a subcategory of carbohydrates. Glucose is mainly made by plants and most algae during #photosynthesis from water and carbon dioxide, using #energy from sunlight. There it is used to make #cellulose in cell walls, which is the most abundant #carbohydrate. In energy metabolism, glucose is the most important source of energy in all organisms. Glucose for metabolism is partially stored as a #polymer, in plants mainly as #starch and amylopectin and in animals as #glycogen. Glucose circulates in the blood of animals as blood sugar. The naturally occurring form of glucose is D-glucose, while L-glucose is produced synthetically in comparably small amounts and is of lesser importance. Happy #moleculemonday !! Civetone is a macrocyclic ketone and the main odorous constituent of civet oil. It is a pheromone sourced from the African civet. It has a strong musky odor that becomes pleasant at extreme dilutions. Civetone is closely related to muscone, the principal odoriferous compound found in musk; the structure of both compounds was elucidated by Leopold Ružička. Today, civetone can be synthesized from precursor chemicals found in palm oil and used as a perfume fixative and flavor. In order to attract jaguars to camera traps, field biologists have used the cologne Calvin Klein's Obsession For Men. It is believed that the civetone in the cologne resembles a territorial marking. :D (from Wikipedia) Image credit: Author Николай Усик / http://paradoxusik.livejournal.com/ #sciencejokes #chemistrymemes #chemistryjokes #staynerdy #chemistry #molecule #moleculeoftheday #science #orgo #molecules #moleculelove #chemistrylove #beautifulchemistry #sciencejokes
