If I’m being honest, the past couple of weeks have been stressful. I love my job, but busy season can be so demanding. That on top of a teething baby has wiped me out.
.
.
Tonight, I’m thankful for a few minutes of calm. I took the opportunity to try out my #gifted colored pencils and sketch pad from @coolbankstore. .
.
Those few minutes were just what I needed to relax, create, and be reminded of where my strength comes from while facing those challenging weeks
.

How do you recharge?
Happy Friday! I hope you all had a lovely 4th and hopefully get the day off today. All of a sudden it’s 1,000 degrees here so you’ll find us at the lake...or hiding inside until the sun goes down. Maybe we’ll finally head off to see Toy Story 4. What are your weekend plans?

I want to ask you about sibling competition. If you grew up with siblings, did you ever feel competitive with them? To be better at something? Prettier? More fun? I have several siblings but our situation is somewhat unconventional and honestly quite impossible to compare to my girls’ lives. So I’m not really sure how to feel about it.
.
.
I know this: Norah has blue eyes, and every time someone sees her eyes they say, “oh my gosh her eyes.” (And I feel that way too, of course...But I try not to vocalize it.) Gracie has brown eyes, and I know the feeling of having “not as pretty brown eyes” myself, and it doesn’t feel great. I couldn’t imagine having a sister with icy blue eyes and everyone obsessing over her “beautiful eyes” then looking over at my brown eyes with no comment.
.
.
Same for someone who is a good at a sport, or playing an instrument: “oh _______, she’s the singer in the family.” But what if the other siblings like to sing to? And maybe they aren’t as good, but they still want to be “the singer”?
.
.
This is why I try to avoid specific titles when I talk to and/about Gracie and Norah. This thought first came up when I was listening to a @janetlansbury podcast, and it’s something I am constantly conscious of. Instead of focusing on Gracie’s labels of “sporty, pretty, smart” I try to focus on how HARD she works at these things and the effort. .
.
Because even though she may not be THE BEST artist ever (or maybe not great at drawing at all) she may still really ENJOY creating art, and if she really does enjoy it, it doesn’t make her any less of an artist than Picasso. .
.
Edit to add: something I forgot to include is that labeling children creates unnecessary pressure. For example, the “smart” child of the family receives a B- and feels they can’t live up to the title they’ve been given, and then they feel badly about their performance. It’s a feeling I’m sure many of us can relate to at one point of life or another. I hope this caption is helpful to you! Sorry about the long captions all the time

This photo is an oldie, but a goodie.
⠀
It was taken during a time when we felt isolated and alone in our new parenting journey. We had no family or friends to surround us. All we had was each other.
⠀
⠀
Even though this was one of the hardest times for us, it’s a moment that I find myself missing often.
⠀
Just us. Figuring out how to parent and continuing to love one another.
