“The View Beneath Monet’s Water Lilies” // Sunshine through the kelp canopy: An immortal muse. I dove in Monterey Bay for the first time ten years ago, and a lot of stuff clicked for me right then and there: “Ah, this is what’s up, I wanna do this right here.” I never really knew how the ocean would affect me. I wanted to work @montereybayaquarium since I was five after seeing the otters there, but I didn’t really have an idea of what that would mean, let alone spending weeks of my life underwater. What a privilege, and what an honor to be able to share what I’ve been so fortunate to experience with you all. . I grew up in the foothills of the French Alps and went to high school outside of Stockholm. This summer, for my 30th lap around the sunfish, I’ll be traveling to the homeland for the first time in a long time. I’ll be seeing friends in Sweden, visiting my older sister in Berlin, and going to my hometown in France to eat my favorite meal (tartiflette, omg). I’m looking at a hefty future charcuterie and cheese bill for sure, and so my idea to soften the financial blow was this: Underwaterpat’s Brielliant Art Sale-ami! . “Light Bulbs” // There’s a lot of new kelp popping up around the Peninsula. Spring time is go time for so many critters, and these younglings are all buoyant and effervescent in their growth spurt to the canopy. It’s nice to see the next generation rising up to take what’s theirs, especially knowing that they’re surrounded on all sides by areas of lost potential, scoured by many generations of booming urchins, grazing for so many years without regard for their deleterious effect on the larger community. It’s not pretty in most places, but the forest is resilient even missing so many trees. It is good indeed to see these light bulbs, eureka moments of the one of the world’s great eukaryotes, rising from the reef to take their place in the sun.

To finish out this #wildlifewednesday ...I just want to say thanks to all the nudibranch species found this weekend - slug-tastic goodness!!! Thanks to @mansonfotos and @felipe_gomez_photography for a fun dive at the Breakwater and to @underwaterpat and @ocean_phil for an equally fun dive at Monastery. Both dives showcasing equal amounts of nudibranch wonderment in their own way. So fun indeed! Thanks!!! . In order: Pic 1: Tritonia festiva, such a gorgeous slug. Phil, rock star critter-hunting fool, led us to an area where we found quite a few of these little beauties. Phil...you’re a stud. Pic 2: Flabellina trilieata - gorgeous little beast! Pic 3: The body texture of a Doris montereyensis is so cool!!! And bumpy. Pic 4: A “portrait” of sorts of a Dendronotus iris. It’s looking right at us. Pic 5: Close-up of a portion of the egg ribbon of a Dendronotus iris. Pic 6: I believe this little cuteness attack of the slug kind is Aldisa sanguinea, or the blood-spot dorid. Pic 7: Abstract shot of sorts of some of cerata of a Dendronotus albus. Pic 8: A “butt shot” of a Diaulula sandiegensis. It’s not really the butt we are looking at. The flower-looking part is their branchial plume. It’s their gills. Pic 9: Tritonia festiva crawling on the underside of Boulder. It was quite uncomfortable trying to take this shot I must admit. “Mermaid In Heaven” // Yesterday’s dunk with @connorgallagherproductions and @ocean_phil was a reminder of how quickly things change during the Spring-time go-time of the wild Monterey Bay waking up from its Winter slumber. Last week the water was blue-green, and now it’s decidedly green-blue, with a haze of microscopic players blooming in earnest as the game starts to ramp up. The annual arrival of the season’s role players is upon us, and they’re all warming up on the sidelines, from the young-of-the-year rockfish rookies to the new bulbs of bull kelp recently enrolled in the development league. This teenage neophyte in the shallows of North Monastery was surrounded by a horde of pesky urchins scouting for new recruits, but it was still playing to impress on its way to join the rest of the darting lineup, ready to soak up the limelight and feeding off the bright energy of an arena in full bloom.

Home in Albania! Yesterday we made the crossing from Greece to Albania (which was a bit weird) and by absolute luck we found a beach to make camp for the night. So far we have been snorkling and the nice man who runs the beach bar (which we thought was closed for winter) served us up easily some of the best food and banter of the trip so far! . #thewilderingcamper #monasterybeach @dyl_kara

A Harbor Seal comes by to check me out during a dive at Monastery Beach, Carmel, CA. Here you can see that seals don’t have the ear flaps that California Sea Lions do. Also you can see the spotted appearance that is indicative of a Harbor Seal. Harbor Seals have large eyes to see better in deep, dark water.
