Unicorniquest - Episode 2 Hubert Lamy Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet 2007. Unicorn has become a very popular term in the wine world these days. In this series my unbiased opinion whether it deserves the status as it sometimes feels that rarity gets valued over quality. For those people who brought some of these: I value intent more than anything else as you simply didn’t make the wine. Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet is by far the smallest of the five Montrachet grand cru siblings with only 1.6 hectares. Hubert Lamy’s version would after d’Auvenay certainly be the most sought after, each of them only yielding a barrel per year. In terms of rarity that firmly checks the unicorn box. This 2007 was very good relaying both the vintage cool citrusy mineral character yet with some Criots fattiness and ripeness that emerged with air. Very good but not as brilliant as more recent vintages that simply burst with tension and electricity, possibly also resulting from the high density plantings. Rightful ? That Roulot Tho! When it is on, there are few wines that can match the beauty and elegance of white Burgundy! And we had three beauties during the DRC tasting. We started with the 99 Etienne Sauzet Puligny-Montrachet “Les Combettes.” From 50 year old vines, this well balanced wine was drinking very well - round and elegant with abundant acidity and a long finish. Since I was feeling lucky, I also opened my last bottle of 01 Bouchard Montrachet. Fortunately, it was on as well and seemingly at its peak. Extremely elegant and generous with notes of honey, lemon, stone fruit and minerality. But the Roulot was the star of this trio! From the second it was open, the 07 Domaine Roulot Mersault 1er Charmes exploded with amazing aromatics - gunflint, smoke, and crushed rock/minerality. This wine was bursting with life and is absolutely peaking right now. Ramonet is arguably a benchmark producer of white wine in the village of Chassagne-Montrachet. And with a rigid approach in both the vineyards and the winery, his outstanding wines are becoming more desirable vintage after vintage . . . Domaine Jean Claude Ramonet Chassagne-Montrachet "Morgeot" 1er cru Burgundy 2016 100%Chardonnay 13,5% alcohol Vinification in stainless steel vats 12-15 month in 33% new French oak barrels . The bouquet opens up with beautiful floral notes, and note of fresh chestnut, lime zest, pears and pastry. The palete is super well balanced with a medium plus acidity to match the fruit. It feels dense in mouth with a lovely smooth texture. There are notes of melon, chalk, honey, butter and orange. Ramonet Bonanza - Flight 5 4th place: Ramonet Batard Montrachet 1985 (magnum). Out of the 19 bottles this tasting it was the only true off-bottle. Cloudy and completely dominated by acetaldehyde with fino sherry saltiness. Bummer. 3rd place: Ramonet Montrachet 1996. Showing older than it was but without being truly oxidized as the wine wasn’t rendered flat as you get in many premoxed wines. Sugarcane, chrysanthemum, dried mango, dessicated coconut, salted caramel. Ripe and round without that 96 acidity to balance. Knowing that both 95 and 96 were patchy at Ramonet I guess this bottle’s cork allowed too much oxygen ingress which expedited the aging process. 2nd place: Ramonet Batard Montrachet 2007 (3x voted 1st, 5x 2nd). Intriguing flavour profile witch cool preserved lemons, peanut skin and spiky acids. Behaving like a cool vintage Chablis, one of the most austere and almost fruitless wines in the line-up. 1st place: Ramonet Montrachet 2006 (5x voted 1st, 3x 2nd). Must have been a first for me to see a 2006 white ending up on top anywhere. But fair enough, this was almost a doppelganger of the 2009 Montrachet. Unashamedly decadent with everything in overdrive: tropical fruits, yellow flowers, mint, oak and hazelnutty reduction (not unlike PYCM).
