No foolin’ around - Morel mushrooms have arrived in Mississippi! Foraged by @freestateforager. Read about his foraging adventures below. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “When I first started foraging wild foods everything I read on the subject seemed to talk about the prized morel mushroom. Although I have always been very observant and spent way more time in the woods than most people I knew, I had never saw a morel in the forests of Mississippi. I also had a hard time finding out if morels even grew in my state but one April morning in 2013 I happened to look down at the right moment and spotted a very small yellow morel mushroom in Holmes County, Mississippi while I was at work. Since then, I have spent numerous hours during the months of March and April studying aerial photos and topography maps trying to find similar areas that may hold a humble patch of Mississippi morels. I have also walked numerous, fruitless miles in search of these amazing fungi only to find I was either wrong in assuming they would grow where I was looking or I had arrived too early or too late in the season. My first two years of searching didn't produce any morels at all other than the one I had found by chance and that area wasn't accessible any more due to ownership. However, for the last four years I have found at least a few and every year I have improved on the locations I'm hunting, as well as, what trees they associate with and the timing of when they will peak in growth. This year I was in the right place and I was there at the right time. I have finally had the opportunity to look out across a forest floor and see a blanket of morels in Mississippi!” - Joseph at @freestateforager
