Today we celebrate the Annunciation of the Holy Archangel Gabriel to our Most Holy and Glorious Lady, the Ever-Virgin Theotokos. Nine months before the incarnation of our Lord, the Archangel was sent from heaven to bear the Good News ("evangelion") to the Virgin Mary, that she would give birth to the Saviour of the world. Initially, the Virgin was afraid and confused as she was unable to comprehend how she might bear a child since she did not know a man. The Archangel assured her that with God, even the order of nature is transcended. The Virgin humbly accepted this to be, despite feeling unworthy. Because of her acceptance of the Will of God, the whole race of humanity was able to be saved. Since today is such a celebratory day in the Church Calendar and in the history of humanity, the fast is slightly lessened for today and we are permitted to eat fish.
