Já falei por aqui que não sou muito fã de livros policiais. Também já disse que nunca tinha lido nada de King por morrer de medo de suas histórias. Pois bem, surgiu a chance de ler o rei do terror de uma forma menos apavorante. E devo admitir que esse foi o melhor thriller que já li! Em todos os livros do gênero que já tive oportunidade de ler, acompanhamos toda a saga da polícia e só descobrimos o assassino no final. King fez diferente: conhecemos, praticamente ao mesmo tempo, o policial e o psicopata. E observamos uma caçada em que os dois são caça e caçador ao mesmo tempo. Brady Hartsfield é um homem inteligente que trabalha em dois empregos medianos, não tem amigos e sofre com sérios problemas de relacionamento com a mãe. Um belo dia, decidiu jogar um carro em cima de uma multidão que aguardava para participar de uma feira de empregos. Várias pessoas foram atropeladas e oito morreram. O caso ficou conhecido como Mr. Mercedes, pois um carro da marca foi usado como arma. Bill Hodges é um policial aposentado que vive pensando em suicídio. Foi um detetive brilhante, mas encerrou sua carreira com alguns casos não solucionados, entre eles o do Mr. Mercedes. Sua vida pacata sofre uma reviravolta quando ele recebe uma carta (anônima, claro) enviada por Brady contando o crime nos mínimos detalhes. Eles começam a se comunicar através de um site de relacionamento e passam a correr contra o tempo para alcançarem seus objetivos: o de Brady, matar o detetive e protagonizar o seu "grand finale" sossegado; o de Hodges, capturar o "psycho killer" e evitar uma grande tragédia. É muito interessante acompanhar a crescente loucura de Brady (um homem cruel e repleto de preconceitos) até sua total insanidade e destruição. Por outro lado, Hodges ganha um novo sopro de vida com a possibilidade de solucionar o caso, sem envolver a polícia (Brady é dele e somente dele), e só contará com a ajuda de dois parceiros nada convencionais. Curiosidade: King é muito ativo no Twitter e compartilha várias informações. Já escreveu que lê 80 livros por ano, que é fã das séries Homeland e GOT e que detesta Trump.
