Fired up my RM 486 DX4/100 today for a little project that's going to involve imaging some floppies for my Atari ST. More on that later! I like to keep all of my vintage machines in good running order, ready to be used at a moment's notice. This PC has been nothing but reliable in the 10 years or so that I've owned it. It's primarily used for transferring files to/from my other retro systems (it's networked and can access my NAS which is incredibly useful) and, well... Installing MS-DOS on a Quadra 700. Not sure what my 12-year old self would do if he saw me doing this. The Quadra has a Houdini card installed which doesn’t fit at all, but it works! I'm finally done working on this Japanese IBM PS/55 Type 5551-T09. Shortly after buying it, the hard drive died, swiftly followed by the floppy drive. The hard drive was an easy fix: a few capacitors and it came back to life. I tried the same fix with the floppy drive to no avail and shelved the project for almost a full year, until recently, when I decided to attempt to modify a standard floppy drive for use with the PS/55's edge connector. I managed to get the machine reading 720KB disks that way, but it refused to work with 1.44MB disks... So I took another look at the original floppy drive and realised I had missed some capacitors on the opposite side of the board.
