⠀ ⠀ Rising from the silt, the curve of glass was unmistakable, it had to be a torpedo bottle, but was it broken? ⠀ ⠀ We have found precious few of these elegantly impractical mineral water bottles and this was a new one. The 'Hamilton' style of bottle was patented in 1814 and remained popular throughout the nineteenth century. The gas pressure inside carbonated drinks bottles tended to loosen the corks if they dried out, so these bottles were designed to be stored on their sides to keep the cork moist. ⠀ ⠀ Please swipe for a video clip of it being lifted. I've attached an old waterproof camera to the glass bottomed bucket, the sound whirrs and amplifies the underwater action against the stones...I promise I am not scraping this precious bottle! ⠀ ⠀ Friday Faffing! These are my treasured antique glass ink bottles, all found in rivers. ⠀ ⠀ I first saw this ink bottle weeks ago, poking out of the underwater riverbank. Then, just as I was reaching in for it, a lady on the path called down to ask what we were doing and when I looked back I couldn't find it. I frantically scrabbled in the muddy water, totally lost the spot and ended up thinking I'd imagined it! Then last Saturday I had to return, just in case and there it lay in the shallow water, as if waiting. Please swipe for my happy clip, just as I saw it...☺️ ⠀ Dating to around the end of the nineteenth century, the jagged glass lip is how this cheap little bottle was finished, blown into a mould and then burst off from the blow pipe. It would have been filled with ink, stoppered with a cork and sealed with wax. The shoulders are shaped for pen rests.
