This Johnson rifle prototype has an added wooden hand guard and is marked R-14. The production Johnson rifles would lose the hand guard and use a different bayonet lug. With or without the hand guard they still didn't replace the M1 Garand in US military service despite Melvin Johnson's best efforts. #cfm #fromthevault #history #museumsofinstagram #firearms #rifle #prototype #museum

In case you need to catch brass at the range or whenever you take your biplane out for a spin. The Winchester 1907 was purchased by several Allied governments during World War I and this example from our collection features one of two styles of brass catchers Winchester tried out. #fromthecollection #cfm #wwi #prototype #museumsofinstagram #winchester

The Marlin Model 44 Shotgun was offered for sale in the 1920s and early 30s. Normally sold as a 20 gauge sporting gun, this one was modified by Carl Swebilius into it's current configuration with a short barrel and pistol grip. Edwin Pugsley put it in the Winchester collection in 1945. #fromthecollection #cfm #shotgun #sbs #pewpew #museumsofinstagram

For the next installment in the #historicalfirearms series, we have written an open letter to flintlocks: Perfected in France in the early 17th century, you quickly became the standard ignition system. This German made flintlock is an early one, created in the late 17th century. You didn't go out of style until the mid-19th century. That means you were in operation for about 300 years. 300 years! You operate on such a simple concept. A flint held by the clamp strikes against the frizzen when the trigger is pulled, raining sparks down onto the priming pan and igniting the charge. And yet this concept revolutionized firearms technology. You were reliable, versatile, and relatively inexpensive. From muzzle-loading muskets and rifles to pistols and even, on rare occasions, breech loaders, you saw the world through many changes. All of our modern firearms technology bears some resemblance to your design. We have much to learn from you. Best wishes, Cody Firearms Museum. . . #oldguns #flintlock #cfm #codyfirearmsmuseum #blastfromthepast #openletter #museumsofinstagram

Today we celebrated #girlsday and #boysday at the museum. We had the pleasure to welcome Svea, Jette, Nick, Cornelius and Sarah and show them some of the variety of jobs that need to be done in a museum. The kids had the chance to prove their talent at our model makers' workshop, to clean and restore an oil painting under the supervision of our conservato/restaurator Bianca Floss and to discover the variety of tasks that our awesome team of facilities managerst hafe to take care of to keep the museum working. After that they all received a lesson in how to steer a gigantic container ship from our experienced captains. Each one of them had the chance to take the helm at our shipping simulator on deck 1. If they don't decide to pursue a career in a museum, maybe the will end up in the merchant navy. Whatever they do, we wish them all the best. We were glad to have you on board, people!

Our next object in the #historicalfirearms series is this wheellock pistol which dates back to the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648). The wheellock was an ignition system that was developed not too long after the matchlock, in the early 16th century. The distinctive wheel on the side of the lock had to be turned back manually, like winding a clock. Powder was placed in the primer pan, and a piece of iron pyrite held in place by the clamp was lowered onto the wheel's edge. Pulling the trigger spun the wheel around, creating friction against the flint and causing sparks, which then lit the charge. Although much more reliable and versatile than the matchlock, it was also much more expensive to produce, and so never came into widespread use. This particular pistol was likely made in Western Europe. . . #cfm #codyfirearmsmuseum #oldguns #blastfromthepast #museumsofinstagram
