Here’s an old reliable vocal processing chain that you can start from! Yes we know...there are many, many other things we can do in the process...but this is a strong foundation which will begin cleaning up the vocal (frequency + dynamics)! . 1️⃣ EQ - take a bit out of the low end using a HPF. Try not too go too far. If the vocal begins to lose its body, back up. The goal is to remove low end rumble from the recording. You can typically cut some mids as well. 250hz is an unpleasant frequency and a great place to start. . 2️⃣ LA-2A - use the LA-2A, in limiter mode, to tame the loudest parts (~3db). . 3️⃣ 1176 - this compressor is then used to tame and shape the performance. Utilize the attack and release to fit the style of vocal you’re using. . . 3️⃣A - Reverb Bus / Send - instead of putting a reverb on the actual vocal, send to a bus / aux that has the reverb on it. You want to have separate control over the dry vocal so you can keep it up front in the mix. Plate Reverbs sound . 4️⃣ Main Output

⚠️ Do your songs pass the hum test?⚠️. . . One of the most overlooked things we face as musicians / artists / music producers / songwriters: Complexity does not have a direct correlation with quality... . . Often times it can have the opposite effect! Majority of your “general audience” are NOT musicians. They don’t have the same ear we have. We need to understand this in terms of songwriting. If the average, non musician, listener can’t hum your tune back...than most people won’t be able to either! Who wants that!?. . . Show your next song to someone, ask them to hum it back after listening. If they can...you pass the HUM TEST! If they can’t...not good! You might have to go back to the drawing board!

VOCAL TUNING: AUTO-TUNE OR MELODYNE? And why? Melodyne and Auto-Tune don’t work on all vocals (sometimes stripping “feeling” from performances) and can’t be relied on to “fix” an uninspired vocal performance.
