How’s this for a #tongueouttuesday? My heart melted into a happy pile of goop watching these little leafcutter bees sticking out their tongues in between swimming through the whipple cholla flowers! Leafcutter bees belong to a genus of solitary bees called Megachile. They, along with many other types of bees are considered long-tongued, though you might not always be able to tell just by looking at them. This is because when they aren’t in use, bees with long tongues fold them up and keep them safely tucked away under their body.

Happy summer solstice! ☀️ How about one more bee post for pollinator week! Among my favorite of the wild bees is the virescent green metallic bee. Belonging to the family Halictidae, they are some of the most beautiful and beneficial pollinators to have buzzing about the garden! I love seeing these little cuties out gathering pollen and nectar, here’s one enjoying the gaillardia. These are actually fairly common critters to see in gardens and urban landscapes due to the fact they they forage from such a wide variety of common flower genera. They’re unpersnickety palette has truly saved them from becoming yet another victim of our increasing human encroachment on the environment, but that still doesn’t mean they don’t need our help. These little metallic marvels as well as nearly 70% of all native North American bees are ground nesters. So along with planting native wildflowers for their food source, think about providing a few feet of bare or sparsely vegetated well-draining soil in a sunny spot to welcome these buzzing beauties to your garden this summer!
