My #1 guy, forever and always ♥️ Little Kai gave us a scare this weekend. He had a fever that just would not go down, we tried Panadol and Ibuprofen. He had a fever seizure last year so that added to our worry. Thankfully after 14 hours, and a very long bath, his fever broke and he’s doing so much better now. I always have so much fun with purple (red) onion skin dye! There’s something so magical about putting fabric into a red liquid and watching it turn green. ✨ Red onions are high in anthocyanins which are responsible for this beautiful green. The large piece of organic cotton muslin was the first piece I put into the dye. It was mordanted with aluminum acetate and is the most vibrant. It is a soon to become a swaddle that will be available in my Etsy shop. The small piece lying on top of the large piece is organic quilting cotton that was also mordanted with aluminum acetate. It went into the dye with the other small samples, after I took the muslin out. The larger piece on the right is organic quilting cotton that was mordanted with soy. The two smaller pieces are also organic quilting cotton that were dipped in vinegar and baking soda solutions to alter the pH after being removed from the dye. In the past, I’ve also gotten beautiful, deep golden colors from red onion skins. Have you ever dyed with purple onions? If so, what color did you get? I’d love to hear about it! Today I finished hemming three naturally dyed, organic cotton teething blankets. Two of these blankets were dyed with my homegrown sulphur cosmos and the other was dyed with wild coreopsis. They come tied onto American grown, chemical and pesticide free maple wood rings that are sealed with organic coconut oil and candelilla wax. You can see that they all slightly differ in sizes. In an effort to be less wasteful, I’ve chosen to use the fabric as is instead of cutting it down to a certain size. Any fabric scraps that are made during the process will all be used as swatches to test future dye colors. I’ve really been into sweet, simple floral prints lately. They look so classic and timeless and effortlessly flow from season to season. Which pattern do you like the best?
