Welcoming more plant color into these lush early summer days. My head spins with the blooms in our backyard and the garden grows at a steady, albeit sometimes unbelievably eager, pace. But onion skins on cotton bring these beautiful warm amber tones to the foreground. Yet this time of year can be frenetic. It buzzes. It hums. It shines so brightly my youngest son wakes at 5:30am like an alarm clock as the sun rises. I can't blame him. I'm eager too. The outdoors beckon and we shuffle out early in pajamas because there are chickens to let forage. There are plants to water. There is tea to steep with windows wide open and birdsong rushing in. Yet I can already feel that swell of late summer plant color harvest: When all the things will want to be dyed with plants. I'm excited for this year's yarrow, coreopsis, marigold, Hopi Black Dye Sunflowers, peppermint, indigo, nettles, goldenrod, sumac, acorns, black walnut hulls, and so it goes. I’m preparing for @tcflowerexchange this week by making a few variations of ribbons dyed with local Minnesota plants to reflect the abundance growing in nature right now. _ My crab apple dye didn’t turn out well, but I’m feeling good about how the violet and geranium turned out. _ I love working on dye projects late into the night in the summer, and it feels especially magical around the new moon. I celebrate the new moon each month with a group of women and we reflect on the previous moon cycle and create personal goals for the upcoming cycle, and I’m looking forward to this ritual tomorrow.
