I keep worrying that if I don’t post new designs and develop new ideas, that your interest in what I’m making might fade away. But then I think that’s just my own shit. There are times for innovating, and there are times for mastering the pieces you’ve already designed...and there are times for showing up damn proud to have the incredible fortune of sending your creations off into the world again and again. Lots of people have asked recently about the ins and outs of carving fine detail. I’m not very good at explaining it, so I thought it might be easier to show it! I can’t zoom in much further than this or things start to go blurry, so I hope you can see at least some of what I’m doing... . General tips that work for me (though everyone’s different!): . - I carve very lightly on fine detail, returning to deepen/tidy marks as need be. Fine, smooth lines need a fairly shallow cutting angle; shorter, wider marks need a slightly steeper angle and a (gentle) flick of the wrist to finish by bringing the tool upwards again (you can see this in action when I do the tails of the fishes). . - as you can see here, I brace the tip of the blade against the index finger of my non-carving hand. This adds another element of control over where the blade does (and doesn’t!) go - my two hands work together to guide the direction of the cuts. Please note though - my finger is *never* in front of the blade!! That would be a terrible idea, resulting in lots of sliced fingers. I keep it to the side of the sharp bit, about 1cm up. . - Tiny tools are only part of the equation - more important is lots of practise with them! You can get fine marks even with larger tools, if you keep them sharp and handle them with a light, controlled touch. . - I almost exclusively use battleship grey lino (available in most art shops), although other people report good results for detail work with Japanese vinyl. For grey lino, make sure it’s fresh and flexible, not brittle (brittle lino crumbles and is much harder to carve). You can make it easier to carve by warming it slightly with a hairdryer (though I never do this). . DJ Shadow on the radio.
