If we talk about the Island within the Island do you know what we are referring to?... #etnadoc !️
.
It is located in the province of Catania and includes part of the territories of 20 foothills municipalities of Etna, the highest active volcano in Europe (3,300 m), a mountain with a perimeter of about 180 km !!!
.
None of these municipalities is fully included in the "Etna" DOC production area! In fact, the defined geographical area takes the form of a semicircle around the volcano!
.
The nature of the soil is closely linked to the volcanic matrix: ashes, sands, lapilli and pumice but also rich in potassium, nitrogen and phosphorus!
.
Just tasted this weekend: Tiade, Etna Rosso by @marchesedellesalinewines , BIO winery, East side!
.
Everything you are looking for in a Red Etna: ruby, intense on the nose, fruity and mineral. ⛰️The taste is elegant, the tannins present are velvety, but nevertheless of body and great balance. The minerality returns perfectly and it remains after you take a sip!
.
Who does not love it?

Un volo virtuale sulle pendici dell'Etna
·
·
·
·
: A virtual flight on the slopes of Etna
·
·
Etna, the highest active volcano in Europe, which stands out strongly in the eastern side of Sicily, as if to dominate the entire island
·
·
It is precisely on the slopes of this volcano that they are produced among the most fascinating and mysterious wines of Italy
·
·
On Etna it is very common to find pre-phylloxera vines, which have more than a century of life, and which have withstood this disease that infested all European and other European vines between the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. only
·
·
Here for me the Etna represents a territory of wines as fascinating as complex; mainly the production areas are divided into districts, which vary a lot depending on the altitude
·
·
I am fortunate to meet two Sicilian DOCs who are great experts in this area, @my_wine_notes @robyabbate , to whom you can ask for advice and clarifications

Birthday celebrations in Rome call for a tribute to tannin management par excellence and the power of volcanic soils! Lucky me, in between Aglianico, the “Nebbiolo of the South” as good as it gets, and a super seductive Nerello Mascalese, the “Nebbiolo meets Pinot Noir” from Etna. And the pleasure of paying reasonable prices for great wine in top restaurants in Rome cannot be highlighted enough!

Today a shoutout for a winery!
Tenuta delle Terre Nere.
I know.. it's not the best picture
Do you know this winery from Sicily?
I tasted some wines at home and also at #summa2019 at @alois.lageder this year.
Their wines are very well made. So check out this winery!
About the winery:
On the northern slopes of the Etna volcano, between the villages of Sollicchiata and Randazzo, lies the beautiful Sicilian winery of Marco de Grazia: Tenuta delle Terre Nere. Literally translated the winery of the black earth, an honorable reference to the color of the volcanic subsurface on which the vines are planted.
The thirty hectares of vineyard of this biologically working wine company between 600 and 1000 meters. Due to its great location, it cools down in the evenings in a climate where the temperatures during the day can reach extremely high levels. A temperature difference of 30 degrees Celsius between day and night is no exception. The wines remain nicely fresh and decorated due to this large temperature difference.
The substrate consists of different types of volcanic rocks, such as, for example, volcanic ash, basaltic boulders and pebbles. This black volcanic opamping gives people a character and a wonderful minerality. Due to the special and unique microclimate and terroir of the winery, Tenuta delle Terre By Marco de Grazia is also affectionately called "the island on the island". Soon I tell you more about the wines. Who loves the wines from Etna? One week ago, I had the opportunity to discover better this volcanic area by @siciliaenprimeur and @just_sicily
Etna DOC has been one of the first Italian Denominations in 1968 and its main grapes are Carricante (white) and Nerello Mascalese (red).
The first wine that I want to propose you is @planetawinery Eruzione 1614 Nerello Mascalese 2014.
Its color is pale ruby. The bouquet is complex and offers the aromas of blueberry, leather, wild strawberry, incense, and a balsamic hint. Well-balanced, full body, tannins are elegant, and the finish is pleasant. An indigenous pairing is with Nero dei Nebrodi, a race of pig from Sicily.
Just one more thing, I tried also the 2017 vintage (barrel sample) and it was incredible! Take some bottles when it will be available on the market and forgot them in your cellar. Etna can give some exceptional wines with a little ageing.
