Do your goals align with your long term vision? If your goal is to build an agency doing $10M in revenue, you need clients or products supporting it. Target demographic research should be one of the first focuses you have when starting an agency. When I started I knew I wanted to target large, enterprise, pre-established businesses in the US. As we’ve gone throughout our sales cycle development, I’ve sharpened our focus on the target. One of my five year goals is growing our agency to 100 employees, floating around the $20M in revenue mark. I can’t get to that point by focusing on clients/products that only bring in $5K/month, I need 100 companies spending $16k/month with us. If your potential client or idea doesn’t have a high likelihood of helping you get to your goal, move on! The opportunity is out there, if you can’t see it, you need to think bigger. If your processes don’t fit it, you may need to restructure. Everything is possible, put in the work!
Why is following up so important? We put all of our leads into our CRM (HubSpot) and create follow up tasks after every call we have with them. If you want to be a successful freelancer or run a powerful agency, you have to keep your pipeline full. That means scheduling meetings with clients and following up with the expectation that it could take 6+ months for them to convert. We’ve kept a healthy balance of hot and cold leads throughout the past year to keep our short term and long term pipelines full. The first example, we had a client contact us two months ago about a React Native position they needed to fill, we followed up and communicated for a month and they went silent. A month later we followed up and they sent us a contract two days later. Another example, we got several meetings setup with a company that has 10,000+ employees and $1-2B in annual revenue but things dried out after three weeks. We followed up this week and they’re now sending over documents to process us as an internal vendor. My point is, people will forget about you. Everyone has a million things going on and you probably aren’t at the top of their list. That is why following up will make or break your business. The typical follow up to close scenario for us Is 8-12 emails, 3-4 meetings.
The most valuable thing I’ve gotten from being in Miami isn’t direct business or clients, it’s the eye opening experiences. As soon as I vacationed here for the first time I got insanely motivated. Everywhere you look there’s businesses, entrepreneurs and high performers. You wake up and walk outside to Lamborghini’s, you go to massive networking events, the beach is 7 minutes away, the people you meet just think differently. Your perspective changes to be limitless. The next time I drive this car, it’s not going to be a rental

Want to get new clients? 90% of the time when I get on the phone with a new client, they have an idea but don’t have a spec sheet outlining their idea. They know they need something, but they don’t know what it means in technical terms. We work with some clients for months before actually closing a deal with them. We work to build out spec sheets and diagrams that solidify and verify their ideas before starting anything. This helps build trust with your customers and shows that you are dedicated to their success. Put in the extra time to help them gain clarity and most of the time, they will go with you. Even if they don’t, they’ll remember your name and company.

___
I've heard it all before, "Are you really a software engineer?!", "No 'real' developer wears makeup!", "You're just faking it to join the trend", "You're just posing with a computer, you're not actually coding" and so much more.
___
And you know what? I'm still a software engineer, no matter how much you can't believe it or how far outside of your stereotype I fall.

Invaluable insight from Angie on how to apply for, prepare for, and slay your conference talk! It is one of my goals to try and speak at a conference this year, so I'm incredibly grateful to be a part of this workshop ☺️

// TODO: Build a slackbot equivalent.
___
Next task I'm working on for our sprint is a Teams bot that will let our internal users can interact with to reset our Demo environment. When finished, this will save our dev team around 12 hours a month of manual work!
___
Also featured here is Otto the Octopus. My husband gave this to me since he said I looked exactly like Otto when I haven't had coffee yet. I think he's right. I miss you @mariotacke
___
Have you built a slackbot/chatbot before? What are some best practices to keep in mind while I build mine? Comment below and let me know!

Today, I set up an Azure function that's triggered by a file being uploaded to blob storage. Our company works a lot with files, so this comes in super handy all the time! This trigger in particular is simple: it kick-starts some processes and notifications to let our platform know a new file is here to work with. I'm creating a tutorial for you guys on how to set this up, so stay tuned!
___
Do you use triggers? How do you use them and what for? I'd love to know in a comment below!

Baguio Life
Baguio has so many spots to explore, it's almost a challenge I've accepted to find the best spots!
___
Obvious criteria include great coffee, fast Wi-Fi, and a beautiful ambiance. @RainCoatCoffeePH meets all of my criteria and really excels in the ambiance department! Clean lines, lots of glass, and wood accents make it one of my favorite coffee shops in Baguio so far!
