For me, somewhere around 1969, haute couture silhouettes—evidenced by the designer original patterns in this Spring 1969 Vogue Patterns magazine—were less elegant looking, the proportions (along with hairstyles, makeup, and accessories) less flattering to the models. Maybe it’s simply that the styles were endlessly copied, so I associate them with the polyester double-knits every woman I remember from that era wearing, from my elementary school teachers to Bea Arthur (!). (The mock turtleneck look is especially hideous.) I notice that the vintage patterns selling on eBay and Etsy from this year forward are usually much cheaper than the earlier ones (with their strong Audrey Hepburn vibe).
