What do you prefer, planting veggies in a raise bed or straight into the ground? .
At the moment I do a little bit of both but ideally I would just chose one or the other ♀️ personally I love the look of a raised bed garden buuuut they can attract slugs & costs more money to build. should we be concerned about the appearance of something if it perfectly functional? how important is the aesthetic to you?
As you know if you follow my stories last weekend goats got into my main garden and ate everything, with the exception of the pig weed and a few basil plants. I have to admit I may have cried. But, luckily, it is still early enough in the season to replant almost everything, and that’s what I have been doing all week.
.
I just want to share that this wasn’t my first big garden fail/loss. Not everything goes right every year. We don’t use chemicals so there are pests to deal with. Weather can be a foe. This year it is goats and my toddler, other years it has been squash bugs or hail or horn worms or late freezes or deer or cabbage moths, but every single year there are big wins too. The goats got this garden, but I can replant and my kitchen garden and the beds we added for our daughters gardens are safe, the beans are starting to climb up the teepees, and the potato patch is doing great. So I wanted to put this out there for anyone who is on the fence about growing things, because they think they might not do it right. Here is a secret: I have done so many things wrong! But in the almost 10 years I have been growing food I have learned so much. I learn a few new tricks and add a few new crops every year. So just grow the things! It is incredibly rewarding and empowering.
.
And if you are thinking about getting livestock, try sheep. They never give us any trouble.

Red Russian Kale ready for a first pick on the left here. On the right, direct sown (and slightly patchy!) coriander and sugarsnap peas. Harvests are getting earlier in the morning now (6am), but one advantage of early picks is that the slugs are still out in force and can be removed in the process. They are having a field day in the misty, murky weather we’re experiencing currently!

Setting up the bamboo frame ready for sweet peas and runner beans. Nearly at the last frost date for our area, bring on the good weather!

Asparagus beds
Another busy day at the allotment
Planting, weeding and tidy up of the asparagus bed
This bed was planted in May 2013 so is well established and always produced lots of spears
I have driven in three 4ft6 post per row and fixed a 3mm wire to each side so to provide support to the ferns and preventing the crowns being walked on.
These crowns can produce many spears and can last for approximately 20 years
