I’m not sure what I was looking for when I signed up for a NOLS Patagonia expedition. I know that when I arrived in Chile the first three entries of my journal were “I want to go home”. Because you miss the comforts of home and the distractions that prevent you from really being with yourself. And then we entered the remote wilderness of Patagonia leaving our phones behind. We spent 28 nights living in a tent. Hiked 145 kilometers through some of the most raw and beautiful landscapes I’ve ever seen. Carried everything we needed to live on our backs - and turns out, you don’t need too much. Crossed rivers. Summited peaks. Learned from Gauchos. Spent our evenings cooking, playing cards, talking, and stargazing instead of scrolling. I wore the same shirt and pants for a month. Saw my reflection only in the clearest of waters. Hiked with wet cold boots, experienced tendinitis, dodged tábanos and stinging caterpillars, repaired torn gear, walked to get water, lost the trail on occasion, and taped cracked skin and blisters. For 28 days we didn’t have any of the normal comforts of home. It was objectively hard. . . And yet it was pure bliss. I woke up laughing, went to sleep laughing. Cried at the beauty and stood in awe almost every day. I was challenged and critiqued. I relied on others and others relied on me. I wasn’t sure what I was looking for, but I certainly found the things that make me feel most alive. Thank you to the expedition members and to the wilderness for reminding me what really matters.
