Well, a young girl called Mary Ann Brailsford, who lived in Southwell, is believed to have sown some apple pips in her garden in the 19th century, one of which grew into the first Bramley apple tree After a man named Matthew Bramley bought the cottage (and tree!), a local nurseryman if he could take cuttings. Bramley agreed on the condition that the apple could be named after him...and hey presto! "Green’s Mill stands on a ridge overlooking the Trent Valley. It is an excellent site for a windmill, being exposed to the winds from all directions. Indeed, there was a post mill on this site before Green’s Mill was built here in 1807 and at least two more post mills further up Windmill Lane.⁣⁣ Windmills were often built on hills or on slopes. This helped ensure that the mill was free from the turbulence caused by the wind blowing over houses, trees, hedges or rough ground.
