I’ve spent some time working on repairing my relationship with food and it’s come from a pretty messed up place to a lot more level but on Sunday, I had a full blown arguement with myself over eating a chocolate croissant for breakfast (May sound ridiculous to some). A few years ago, this would have been pretty problematic for me. I was in a really negative space with food but now I would consider myself to be very intuitive and pretty healthy in terms of relationship with food (With a lot of work). I croissants and eat them if I fancy one.
That inner dialogue started again though and I began scanning what I had eaten the previous week to justify whether it was acceptable for me to have this too. I had had a stressful week with clinic and taking on a new role among other commitments so food and exercise was the last thing on my mind (Which is completely understandable and OK). Does not exercising or eating properly make me a bad person? Absolutely not but digging deep and finding some self-compassion can be really tough sometimes. I ignored all of the hard work I had been doing for my career and placed all of my value on the quality and quantity of my food and exercise that week. I suppose I wanted to share this because despite this being my job, I still struggle too.
Years of learned behaviours from dieting don’t just go away and I know this is such a minor example in comparison to how some of you might be struggling with food but remember there is SO much more to you than your diet or how much exercise you do. You’re doing so great so just keep going and take it one day at a time
Melasma (discoloration of the skin) is a chronic and frustrating skin condition with lots of triggers. One of the worst is sun exposure and even heat on its own. We see this a lot in the warmer months when people think they are protected by having sunscreen in their makeup. Even sitting under an umbrella or hot yoga can worsen Melasma. Melasma can be hormone related from pregnancy, birth control and even thyroid disorders.
It is important to see a team of skincare experts who can customize a treatment plan which may include laser, peels and home care. Certain lasers can worsen this condition. Melasma cannot be cured, but rather controlled. We especially love the ZO Skin Health regimens from Dr. Obagi.

4 months ago, Sally made the decision to look after her health after she had some cardiac issues. She began doing some light weights in the gym and walking with her husband in the evenings. This soon turned into a love for hiking.
Alongside this, Sally began working on her relationship with food after years of dieting. By doing so, she was able to establish a healthy relationship with food and eat a balanced diet that she enjoyed every day.
4 months later, Sally had a routine check-up with her GP. Her blood pressure had fallen to within normal limits, her cholesterol level had lowered and her overall fitness levels improved.
Previously Sally would become quite breathless on exertion and now she could hike every weekend with her partner (Sometimes beating him to the top). The only thing that didn’t change was the scales. As a result, Sally was told that she would need to focus more on her health to ensure her weight reduced and all of the other markers were ignored. This left Sally feeling deflated.
Our weight is NOT only determinant of health. As you can see above, several other important health markers can improve without our weight changing.
Yes, our weight can have a negative affect on health at either ends of the spectrum but it is not the only determinant. We need to broaden how we measure health instead of solely focusing on weight.
