I have been working as a home health nurse for the last 6 months and I wanted to share a bit about my experience with you guys! Before working in home health I imagined it to be a lot of very sick, bed bound patients who I basically would go see for vital signs or to bathe them. I was so wrong! The majority of my patients are ambulatory and I have given ZERO baths! As an RN, I would say the majority of my tasks in the home consist of assessments and education. Most patients are referred to home health after a hospital stay which consisted of a new diagnosis or a medication change. The nurses help the patients learn about their disease process and what each medication they take is for. It is so rewarding to hear a patient sincerely thank you for simply taking a few minutes just to explain things to them in a way they can understand! We also get a lot of patients who have wound care needs. This is something I am not crazy about, but it has allowed me to learn so much about caring for wounds. Before I started this job I had never applied a wound vac, and now I have done more than I can count! Home health is such a different world but it is one of the most rewarding jobs I’ve ever had!
