Hi loves! I’m so excited to share with you all today about..... MY FIRST CODE BLUE ❕ . . I will never forget this night... I had not yet graduated nursing school and was working as a student nurse alongside my preceptor. It was my final semester of school and I was assigned night shift for my last round of clinicals in my preceptorship assignment. . . We had finished our first rounds and were going through charting together. I was sipping coffee and eating my peanut butter + banana sandwich (BEST COMBO EVER) and that’s when I heard it. “Code BLUE Room 3120”. I swear I heard it in slow motion if that’s even possible. I looked at my preceptor and we RAN into our patients’ room. And there she was, lifeless, limp, pale...with a PCT standing next to her and the nursing supervisor doing chest compressions. Barbara(my preceptor) immediately grabbed the crash cart and we started running the code. In the blink of an eye there were about fifteen people in this tiny little room. I was assigned to be the WRITER! OMG I WAS SHAKING. One dose of epi, a second dose, a third. A bolus, the defribillator, it was all happening. I think the code only lasted 20 minutes but it felt like five hours. ⏳⌛️⏳⌛️⏳ . . This was an extremely rough night because not only was it my first code, but because we lost the patient. She was old and frail and we did everything we could. I was heartbroken. I cried on and off for the rest of my shift. We had a meeting about the code to discuss and debrief. I learned so much. But mostly that night I learned the intensity of what it means to be a nurse dealing with life and death daily, hourly. . . Being a nurse is not for the faint of heart. With good support, leadership and experience, you will slowly but surely evolve & overcome your fears. One day at a time. One code at a time. One shift at a time.

What could this be? . It’s probably not what you were thinking - it’s actually a prosthetic heart valve! Blood flows through the chambers of the heart by passing through one-way heart valves. There are 4 major valves that allow blood to pass through the heart: the aortic valve, the mitral valve, the tricuspid valve, and pulmonary valve. Each valve of the heart is pressure-sensitive, and will open when the perfect amount of pressure builds up. Pressure builds as the chambers of the heart fill with blood and the heart begins to contract. This provides the necessary pressure to eject blood through the valves. . If a valve doesn't open or has problems closing, it can lead to a variety of complications. If the valves don't close tightly enough, blood may leak backwards. This means the heart must work harder to pump the same about of blood. If the valve doesn't fully open less blood will fill the next chamber, which means there will be less blood pumped through the circulation. . There are two types of valve replacements, mechanical and biological. Mechanical valves are created with artificial materials. Patients with mechanical valves must take blood thinner medication (ex. warfarin) for the rest of their life. Biological valves are made from pigs, cow, or human donors. It is not necessary to take blood thinners but the valves will last 12 to 15 years. . I started my first IV yesterday! I’m definitely feeling more and more like a nurse every shift! My critical care theory class has me turned upside down though. We had a huge computer glitch with our last test resulting in people getting different numbers of questions on their tests so now the teachers are having to manually grade them. Hopefully it gets sorted out soon and they find a fair solution for everyone. Only two more weeks left and I will officially be done with the toughest course in my entire program. I’m also only a month away from the halfway point of nursing school and I feel so fortunate to still be more in love with this profession every day. Every night before I go to bed, this is what my office looks like. ⠀ ⠀ Why? ⠀ ⠀ Because I have goals and dreams I’m working towards that require me to be focused. ⠀ ⠀ When I walk in this room at 5 am and it’s a disaster, I am not productive at all! I’m all over the place looking at different papers, books, etc., thinking about all of the things I need to do instead of focusing in on my goals. ⠀ ⠀ Now, as apart of my nightly routine, I get this space ready for the next morning (as well as my coffee! )⠀ ⠀ I throw crap away that I don’t need, I set my planner out front and center, I charge my laptop, I clean the desk off, and...... ⠀ I put that piece of paper over my planner to remind me to quick messing around and get to work! (swipe to see it! )⠀ ⠀ Friends, if you’re struggling to get stuff done, take a look at the space you’re in. You don’t need a fancy desk or an office. You can be in your living or at the kitchen table (that’s where I use to work!) ⠀ ⠀ Wherever you’re at, it needs to be clean and organized so you can focus on the things that are most important to YOU!
