Nymphaea thermarum is both the smallest and the rarest water lily in the world. As far as we know, it is completely extinct in the wild. It was first described back in 1987 after botanist Eberhard Fischer found some growing in the mud of a hot spring in Rwanda, Africa. It didn't take long to realized that it was quite rare and so a few specimens were collected and brought back to Germany. This was a wise decision on his part because after decades of habitat degradation, the hot spring was completely diverted by locals, killing off the entire population. For years, the original specimens were struggling in captivity. It was looking like this species was going to be lost forever. That was until a handful of seedlings ended up in the hands of plant germination specialist Carlos Magdalena (@magdalena_carlos) of the Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew. The key that unlocked the door to propagating this species was understanding its unique habitat. Apparently, N. thermarum was not growing in deep water like its cousins. Instead, it seemed to only grow in the wet mud surrounding the hot spring. By mimicking this in the greenhouse, 8 new plants were grown to maturity. This may seem like a small amount but for the last remaining members of a species, every little bit counts. Today the seeds of those plants have been distributed to a handful of different botanical gardens around the world, which has saved this tiny water lily from disappearing from this world completely. 熱帯スイレン「フレンドシップ」開花！初花でまだまだ本領発揮してませんが結構いい感じです。 とっても貴重な品種なのですが、6月頃に一度カラスのイタズラで引っこ抜かれまして‥その際に睡蓮鉢の外に放り出され干からびてしまった品種もありますが、幸いこちらは水中を漂っている状態だったので復活して咲かせることが出来ました。危なかった‥ 2〜3枚めはついでにアップの「アヴァランチ」と「アイス・クイーン」です。 #スイレン #睡蓮 #Nymphaea #waterlily #熱帯スイレン #熱帯睡蓮

О том, какой город мне напомнил Амстердам(на фото). (ворчащая бабка mode on) Я не фанат Амстердама, вообще не понимаю, в чем прелесть ходить сквозь толпы людей в поисках запретных на родине развлечений. Архитектура, каналы и музеи уходят на второй план при таком изобилии изголодавшихся туристов. В Дублине, как мне показалось, атмосфера очень похожая. Снова ТОЛПЫ людей, в этот раз, правда, одетые не по погоде и явно переборщившие с автозагаром, но в целом примерно такое же настроение. Идёшь по улице: с одной стороны транс прайд, с другой - коллективы мальчишников и девичников, а средний градус алкоголя (или ещё чего) на душу населения кажется приподнятым. Любите ли вы такую обстановку? Или стараетесь таких мест избегать?

Here’s a quick snap of the first indoor living wall I ever attempted making (aside from the enormous outdoor ones I have designed for #chelseaflowershow). It uses no tech other than 2 @ikeauk grow lamps. The wall is irrigated just by the wick effect from the moisture it draws up from the tank below. What’s that white flower in the centre? It’s a dwarf waterlily, one of the few species here that deviates from the Bornean jungle theme.
