Having an octopus around the house is a big responsibility. They're intelligent creatures that require constant stimulation. . ‍♀️ Keep a bookshelf with dedicated reading material for your octopus, such as Be A Mermaid, by Sarah Ford (a firm favorite among the more ambitious cephalopods). . Your octopus will have no trouble retrieving books for himself at his leisure (swipe for a demo), and you can even train him to put them back. A well-trained octopus keeps a tidy bookshelf. . Keep some crabs, shrimp or snails in your pocket and reward your octopus with his favorite treats to reinforce good behavior. . With a little patience and a lot of love, you'll form an unbreakable bond with your new friend! . #ApolloTheOctopus Tap the link in my profile to get the pattern. . #octoNation

Goodnight Pyjama Squid ! This rare species of Bobtail Squid is called the “Pyjama” squid because of its stripes, squinted eyes, and a tendency to hide under the sand like warm bed covers! And oh yeah... this little guy is extremely poisonous. While walking through the seagrass in Western Australian coasts, keep an eye out for the Pyjama Squid! @shereemarris ©️. Do you know about the blanket octopus? ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ footage by: Joseph Elayani ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣ The rarely sighted female blanket octopus (tremoctopus) can grow to six feet and has long, flowing sheets of iridescent flesh trailing behind her. She’s the female superhero of the sea!⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ The graceful rainbow colored cape of the blanket octopus helps her appear larger & intimidating to potential predators! ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ In the beginning of this video her cape is completely extended... as the clip goes on she pulls it up by her body to swim faster!⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ She’ll spend her entire life living in the open ocean only descending to avoid predators. ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ In situations of distress, she can break off portions of her cape to make a faster getaway.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⚡️Scientists have observed the blanket octopus ripping the highly venomous, whip-like tentacles off of the man o’ war (a jellyfish-like creature) and using them as a defense to stun their predators & prey. ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ It’s so incredibly uncommon to see the blanket octopus— there are very few videos of this creature (so be sure to @ someone who loves the ocean below! ) ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ Okay so what about the male? Do they have capes as well? ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ Turns out the male is 40,000 times lighter & the size of a walnut seed .9 inches! ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ This couple represents an extreme degree of sexual size-dimorphism- when a tiny male finds a female he detaches his mating arm (hectocotylus) and gives it to the female, who keeps it in her mantle cavity until it’s needed to fertilize her up to 100,000 eggs! ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ She doesn’t lay the eggs either... she’ll brave through the ocean with them tied to her arms. ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣ : Hope for a fallen world by Dr. Pheel ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ ✍️ Knowledge by @octonation ⁣⁣⁣⁣- the largest octopus fan club - join at octopusmagic.com ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣#️⃣ #octonation #belize #caribbean #discoverocean #adventures #ecoresort #ecotravel #outdoors #oceanconservation #privateisland #savethereef #savingthewaves #scuba #snorkeling ⁣⁣⁣ #travelbelize #underwaterphotography #uwphotography #cephalopod #hopespots #octopus #nature #animals #nationalgeographic #NatGeo #NatGeoYourShot

Follow @OctoNation - Can ya guess this species? ⁣ : @oceanvizion ⁣ ⁣ 1️⃣HANK! from Disney’s “Finding Dory” was modeled after a mimic octopus — Pixar had to develop a new animation software because of the complex movements of an octopus- one scene in particular took 2 years to complete. ⁣ ⁣ 2️⃣A mimic octopus can change its shape/pattern depending on observing the known predators in its environment. For example, if it is threatened by a damselfish, the mimic octopus will impersonate a banded sea snake. ⁣ ⁣ 3️⃣ Researchers believe the mimic to be a carnivorous sea animal, their diet consisting of small fish and crustaceans ⁣ ⁣ 4️⃣ There are 15 known animals the Mimic has has the ability to mimic. Such animals include the flatfish, sole, lion fish, sea snake, brittle stars, sea anemones, jellyfish, stingray, crabs, and mantis shrimp among other creatures.⁣ ⁣ 5️⃣ The mimic octopus wasn't discovered until 1998 in Indonesia- there is a lot still to be learned/observed. ⁣ 6️⃣ Scientists believe the mimic may be the only octopus that uses memory to model other creatures behaviors even when they’re not around. ⁣ ⁣ 7️⃣ The octopus has a 2-foot arm span that comes in handy when searching through super narrow cracks for food (although their arms could end up as a snack to eels ) ⁣ ⁣ 8️⃣ Not only do Mimics copy the movements of primarily toxic animals- but they’ll also turn their bodies to those colors so to confuse predators in whatever environment they find themselves in. ⁣ ⁣ Which fact surprised you? @ a buddy below! ⁣ ⁣ Knowledge by: @octonation ⁣ ⁣ #️⃣ #octonation #dive #padi #subsea #uwphotography #underwaterphotography #oceanconservation @mission_blue #octopus #blueplanet @clarklittle #natgeoyourshot #uwmacro #paditv #discoverocean @discoverocean @fathomlesslife @lonelywhale #cuteanimals  #thedodo #scuba #scubadiving #underwater #scubalife #instadive #savethereef #Indonesia #gilimeno #giliair #gilitrawangan #hopespots ⁣⁣#diveresort #stemeducation ⁣ ⁣
