This is Katelyn. You have no idea why this photo brings me tears and makes my chest tighten. Katelyn was a nursing student 8 years ago and was finishing up her last semester in 5NW at @childrenshospitalwi Katelyn wore the cutest clogs and spent hours and hours talking with a mom over her sweet baby on life support. When all the family went home and the lights on the floor dimmed and the rest of #Milwaukee slept, Katelyn cried and laughed with this mom. Katelyn’s smile was written on this mom’s heart. I am that mom and Katelyn was my son Owen’s overnight nurse 8 years ago. I have never forgotten her smile or her love. Imagine the shock and emotion when I was handing out meat stick samples at the @mkemomsblog Easter Egg Hunt event. She has probably had hundreds of patients since our stay, but as soon as we locked eyes - we knew each other. She is now a nurse in the cardiac ICU and has a husband and a son of her own. Hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) is a severe congenital heart defect in which the left side of the heart is underdeveloped. Their is no cure for this. Their is a series of operations that may help save their life’s or a heart transplant. Raiden was given the opportunity of life Feb.26 2018. It’s almost been a year.
