Gorgeous fossil leaves from Oregon! My trip home was AMAZING and it included checking out the paleontology collections and the @mnch_uo exhibits. These fossil leaves are from the Eocene (~50 million yrs old) of the Willamette Valley, western Oregon.
2: Beautiful teeth from an early toothed whale discovered on the Oregon coast. The exact ID is still in the works.
3: The skull of the bone-crushing dog Tephrocyon. This extinct dog lived ~15 million years ago and is from the John Day Fossil Beds.
4: Giant salmon vertebrae from the Miocene of central Oregon.
5: Brontothere jaw (extinct rhino-like mammal ) from the late Eocene of eastern Oregon. I went to summer camps in this area as a kid!
6: Needles from Metasequoia, the dawn redwood tree. This conifer is the state fossil of Oregon!
7: The skeleton of an oreodont (sheep-pig-camel mammal) from the John Day Fossil Beds NM.
8: GIANT SPIKE-TOOTHED SALMON! Yes, Oregon really had salmon that big back 12-5 million years ago! Artwork by @ray.troll and sculpture by @staabstudios
9: And dinosaurs! The current traveling exhibit at @mnch_uo is called “Dinosaurs Take Flight” and highlights Archaeopteryx specimens.
10: Fossil map of Oregon by @ray.troll on display at @mnch_uo. I highly recommend checking out this museum if you ever have the chance. I volunteered here during high school and college and it’s a truly incredible place. Huge thanks to the museum and the faculty & students who made #WAVP2019 possible!

Seems appropriate to celebrate #fossilfriday that happens to coincide with #goodfriday with Palaeolagus haydeni, an extinct genus of lagomorph (rabbit) that lived between 40-23 million years ago (Eocene-Oligocene) across North America and Asia. This extinct species was originally described in the mid 1850s and this particular specimen comes from the White River Badlands in Wyoming. Swipe left for a reconstruction. For those that celebrate Easter (and those that don’t) enjoy your Friday and the following weekend wherever you are. Salute!

Scale: specimen is 16.5 cm across.

It’s #fossilfriday! Let’s celebrate by meeting a new early lineage of crab from the mid-Cretaceous (~95 Ma) of Colombia and the United States. These relatively small crustaceans had a strange mosaic of body parts - including large compound eyes, a spindle-shaped body, leg-like mouth parts and large oar-like legs that represent the earliest known adaptations in crabs for active swimming. The strange mix of features suggest this animal retained larval traits into adulthood - a developmental process called pedomorphosis. Swipe left to see reconstructions of this crazy little chimera!
