If a patient is being started on medication for general depression, we need a way to quantify their progress. The PHQ-9 is a simple but effective tool for assessing depression at baseline and after the initiation of treatment. Community pharmacists have many opportunities to use this tool. If a person is asking about their medication or you simply notice a patient with new medication for depression, offer them a copy or two of the PHQ-9. Have them fill out a copy that day and tell them to fill out another copy before their next appointment with the physician. They can bring both copies to their appointment and discuss the progress with the physician. It's a very quick intervention and shows local providers that the patients pharmacist is taking an active role in their treatment. You can even attach your business card to the sheet in case the provider or patient wants to contact you. . Wow! Where do I even begin...this has to be my second biggest accomplishment in my whole life (getting a Bachelors degree will always be #1). Mental health has always been a huge issue with me whether it be myself, a family member/friend, or just another human being. Having any kind of mental illness sucks. It really does and it’s hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel no matter how many positive things or people you have around you. This year has been my worst! I felt like I was nothing and didn’t deserve to be here or to even have the things/family/friends that I have. I’m constantly down on myself telling lies about not being pretty, being a failure, that I’m too fat, that I’m not good enough for anyone or anything, that I deserve to be gone, that I don’t deserve to be happy. For the past two weeks I’ve tried a new medication, I’ve had a more positive outlook on life, telling myself that I am good enough (that I am probably better than a lot of the stuff/people I put my energy into for what...nothing), finding my faith, and most importantly I ! Last Tuesday we had a Team Around the Family (TAF) meeting, and I broke down as I was giving my feedback. [Professionals reaching for tissues, type of breakdown]. The last few weeks have been really hard, lots of serious child-on-parent violence and I spend all my time giving my everything for the boys, because that is what a Mum does. It has taken a massive toll on my mental health. PHQ9 score is 24 out of 27.... something has to give, and if I go down everything will crumble.
