I'm doing this so we can think about growing up as artists, using references, being inspired by other artists and stealing / plagiarism. Yesterday I found this artwork that noticeably has lots of hard work on it. It also went viral, liked for example by @andy_muschietti , director of IT. And it's also a video, so it's great for formats like @instagram . It's smart in various aspects. But it rang a bell on me, and I realized that the background, composition, perspective and lighting were exact copies of the @bloodwindow illustration I did back in 2014. I talked with the artist, it's a non-commercial fan art and she accepted that she was lazy and used my illustration as main guide for composition. She offered to credit me in the picture, and I told her that, since she wasn't going to erase the image because it had gone viral, I was going to write this words anyway. The sad thing, I think, is that by erasing this effort and taking unprofessional shortcuts, we miss the best parts of creating something. I remember myself, 5 years ago, trying to solve this composition, adding monsters, talking with the client. And after all the hard work, being that illustration my first poster and the one that started everything, I remember it went viral by its own. Pages like Stan Winston's school, @monstregram , artists like @slash shared it. All the effort paid through the years, and nowadays I can say I'm doing this for a living. I feel privileged and proud about it. Please don't be lazy, please don't avoid the effort and joy that creative works can bring. UPDATE 17th December Proven, It is a blatant Plagiarism The mural artist who did it already admit and apologized that he copied my artwork at @foliebali , based on reference given by Kin Seminyak, he admit that during the process he view the full design by browsing the original images through @foliebali instagram. Kin Seminyak also apologize that they did not meant to copy the design, but they admit that they use my design as a reference and give it to the Mural Artist and ask him to make an alteration so it wont be the same, but When it’s turn out the same as Folie Bali Mural, Kin Seminyak doesn’t confront the mural artist, and continue using the Mural as their media campaign. But all went well, we sat together and make things clear, The Mural artist will take down the mural, and Kin Seminyak will take down any media campaign associated with this copied Mural. Ladies and gentlemen, we won . My artwork for @foliebali has been copied by @kinseminyak , i post some comments in their account but they blocked me and erased all the comments about this mural. They also deleted all the other comments that asking about their clarification ! Oma embroidery plagiarised by an Italian luxury clothing brand! We contacted MaxMara and gave them a chance to respond and…nothing. ・ Nothing about how they duplicated traditional handmade designs of the tiny Oma ethnic minority group of rural Laos, and factory printed them on garments that are being sold for several hundred dollars in high-end boutiques. Nothing about why they have not acknowledged the source of these motifs. Nothing about how they sourced these patterns, and if they compensated the artisans for their creative property. ・ Let’s be clear, these designs are not “inspired by” or “an interpretation of” Oma motifs; they are copied. The colour, composition, and motifs are exact replicas, so besides being lazy and unoriginal design work, it’s also direct plagiarism. ・ The power imbalance here couldn’t be more stark - an international fashion brand profiting off the traditional designs of ethnic minority artisans in rural Southeast Asia. We work very closely with the Oma community here in northern Laos. Acknowledging and compensating artisans for their work and creativity, no matter who they are and where they come from, is important. ・ Max Mara, please do the right thing. We ask that you: (1) pull the clothing line from your stores and online, (2) publicly commit to not plagiarising designs again, and (3) donating 100% of the proceeds already earned from the sale of these garments to an organisation that works to support the intellectual property rights of ethnic minorities. ・ Tag @MaxMara and hashtag #MaxOma to get their attention when you share this story and your thoughts. The other day, I commented on a video shared by a musician. I asked him to give credits to the creator. The musician told me to concentrate on the message rather than the person who created it. I didn’t respond knowing that there was no point. People rarely have regard for the hard work put into generating quality content. Instagram is filled with pages and people who just repost other people’s content without credits. The way you bloom slowly. This is my mood today. 3 projects to work on, I have to remind myself it's okay to take my time. Unfortunately, it seems I took too long to work on a project I announced two years ago on my page,I even had it in my bio for a year, a project that I knew needed a lot of time and love to be poured into was unfortunately taken by someone who took my name and idea and published it. I think the way I found out was the weirdest part. I had a dream that someone (I even saw the real person in my dream, she has blonde hair) was using my name, the naked heart. I woke up and looked it up and I found out that someone not only was using my name, but took my idea and published it. My heart was broken and I really wanted to call her out on it but I held myself back. I had to breathe and not take myself down that rabbit hole. It's always bitten me in the ass. So I let it go and still continue to work on my project silently. It's been an evolving project one that I wasn't ready to fully share with the online world as it was still so early in the process. I shared some images two years ago that are now archived because of what I've found out. Im going to stay strong and continue what I've been doing. I really can't wait to share this project with you. My name and idea may have been ripped off but the authenticity and vision I have for it can never be taken away. It's important to recognize how something makes you feel and how you choose to react to it. Even though this sucks, I'm glad it happened. It pushed me to realize things I didn't before. I wish her well and all the success and I hope she doesn't do something like that again. Staying true to your heART is so important. Please remember that. Authenticity always wins.
