Treated myself to a lil DIY salad bar vegan Mediterranean bowl .
.
Technically I’m not vegan, but I do avoid meat and dairy. Why? Well, for starters I am disgusted by the way that we raise meat in the US. Second, the global animal agriculture industry makes up about 14.5% of greenhouse gas emissions each year. To put that in perspective, that’s about the same amount of emissions as the global percentage for cars, trains, planes and boats combined. Third, I just don’t really want to eat animals or their milk.
.
.
But like I said, I’m not vegan. My relationship with eating meat has gone back and forth over the years. It all started back in college when I took a class called “Global Change Ecology” which was basically just a crash course on all the sh*t that we are doing to destroy to the planet. Bam, no more beef. Then I was pescatarian for about a year and half. That was fine and great, until I learned that fishing nets account for 46% of ocean pollution and that there is likely plastic inside of the fish that we’re eating. So I steered away from fish and started eating chicken again.
.
.
Now I’m at a point where I want to cut it all out. It’s mostly to align with my values, but also simply because I want to, and that’s good enough reason as any. But I know that putting myself into a box with hard rules isn’t sustainable for me when making a long-term lifestyle change. So instead of making a sweeping declaration of veganism, I plan to take it in stride and make each grocery store & restaurant decision accordingly. And sometimes those choices are hard AF. Yes hard in a self-disciplinary way, but also because it’s difficult to know what the right choice is. What’s more sustainable: Local cow milk butter or vegan butter made from thirsty nut crops that is shipped across the country? Package free food with dairy or vegan food wrapped in plastic?
.
.
The point is that sustainable food choices are complicated. And changing habits is really tough. But it’s objective science that reducing our meat and dairy consumption is necessary to save the planet. So I am going to do that, allowing plenty of hiccups and imperfections and learning along the way.

We’ve been wondering about this for a while as we currently offer brown kraft paper bags free to customers. Whilst they might be seen as a better choice than plastic, they are still a single use item, and this is what we want to work away from.
.
We will be introducing a small charge on our brown kraft paper bags provided on the stalls and in store next month. Plenty of our customers already reuse and bring their own containers and this is wonderful, and something we want to encourage.

A new study published in the journal 'Nature' attempted to quantify the harm plastic is having on the turtle population of eastern Australia. A team led by Dr Britta Denise Hardesty from @CSIROgram examined data from nearly 1,000 dead turtles to understand the role plastic played in their deaths and found the youngest turtles appeared to be most susceptible to plastic pollution. #turtletuesday
This place wants to be the world’s first ‘plastic-neutral’ country.⠀
