HERITAGE BREEDS WEEK: Teddy the Poitou Donkey Endangered Status: Critical Part 3 of 4 Sorry for my delay in getting this posted. Heritage Breeds Week is officially over, but I support it and believe it should be celebrated year round. The Poitou is a French breed of donkey, also valued for its production of mules which has been documented for over one thousand years. The Poitou breed was standardized around 1700. The breed nearly became extinct after World War II, when the demand for mules collapsed. By 1980 fewer than 80 registered Poitou’s existed. The most noticeable feature of the Poitou is they have long hair which left untrimmed will grow into cords that cover the entire body. This photo shoot was another perfect example of the connections that are being made through my photo project. As with the Mammoths, I met a gal named Sandy, at one of my art shows. During conversation she informed me that she had a Poitou donkey! I got so excited I almost followed her home that day, but I had an art show to finish and she had just had him shaved to keep him cooler during the warmer Missouri months. I just visited with Sandy and her Poitou, Teddy, this spring. I found out she also had two mini donkeys, several mini horses, and several big horses….eleven equine in all and most were rescues. When I asked her why she had rescued and cared for so many, she simply looked at me and stated….”Because animals are my life”. She said she had the means, the space, and enough love to give them all a caring home. I always found Teddy extremely difficult to photograph because he wanted to have his face in my face , which forced me to spend more time petting him, than taking his picture.
