Keith Haring, "Untitled", 1989, acrylic and enamel on canvas, 183 x 183 cm, Keith Haring Foundation.
Keith Haring, 1958-1990, was a leading figure in New York’s downtown community in the 1980s, which took its creativity from urban street culture. He was inspired by graffiti, comic strips, music, dance, ‘high’ art and popular culture, and developed a wholly distinctive visual style. With fellow artists Kenny Scharf and Jean-Michel Basquiat, Haring immersed himself in the punk clubs and street art scene of New York. In 1981 he began drawing graffiti, unauthorized chalk drawings on blank black advertising panels, in the New York subways. These would eventually number in the thousands, and they quickly created a popular following for his lively figural and patterned imagery and his cheekily outlaw activity. Haring’s artworks are impressive and create a visual spectacle; from his early ‘subway drawings’ – his first public works in New York metro stations – and large-scale paintings on canvas and vinyl tarps, to his numerous works on paper, miscellaneous objects and sculptures. Haring’s energetic personality, infectious sense of play, and universally understood hieroglyphic style brought him attention from the mainstream press and transferred easily into his work in music videos and fashion design. In 1986 Haring opened a store called the Pop Shop in New York City, where he marketed products that ranged from T-shirts and pin-on buttons to original prints. In many of his work, Haring took a clear stance against the excesses of capitalism and he was committed to nuclear disarmament, environmental protection, the struggle against AIDS and equal rights for all. He had a tremendous influence on his generation, and although his career spanned just a single decade, the effect of his visual language is none the less for it.

Keith Haring: "Other artists had been accusing me of selling out since my paintings started selling. I mean, I don't know what they intended me to do: Just stay in the subway the rest of my life? Somehow that would have made me stay pure? By 1984 the subway thing started to backfire, because everyone was stealing the pieces. I'd go down and draw in the subway, and two hours later every piece would be gone. They were turning up for sale. My work was starting to become more expensive and more popular within the art market. Those prices meant that only people who could afford big art prices could have access to the work. The Pop Shop makes it accessible. To me, the Pop Shop is totally in keeping ideologically with what Andy was doing and what conceptual artists and earth artists were doing: It was all about participation on a big level. If it was about money, I could have been the most successful commercial designer and illustrator in the world. I’ve turned down numerous huge things. I've been approached to do Saturday-morning television and breakfast cereals. I didn't do the advertisements for Kraft cheese or Dodge trucks." - Rolling Stone (August 10, 1989)
