I’ve been asked about my process for printing on fabric ... in reality it varies depending on the design. So I’ve been printing more fabric pieces today, but whereas I used SafeWash inks and my book press for my bee and butterfly prints a couple of days ago (as they’re a single image with lots of detail), these fern prints are hand printed using fabric paint by @pickprettypaints. I find it much easier to create the repeat by hand rather than with the press and in this situation find that fabric paint or screen printing ink gives better coverage than the normal relief inks. I use a normal brayer (roller) for the SafeWash inks, but use an Essdee textile roller with the fabric ink, it’s slightly spongy so it doesn’t slip around in the looser ink. I use a hard roller to apply pressure on the reverse to transfer the ink. One thing I have found is that I have to regularly clean the block to stop it from getting blocked up with ink, but if I do this it prints pretty evenly by hand. And the biggest bonus is that it dries overnight and can be ironed then to set the ink. I have previously created an insta highlight with step by step photos, so do take a look

Always delightful to see how fabric is printed with rotary screen. Love the process. White prepared for print cotton with each screen perfectly registered to fill in exact color in exacting location. Dye stuff is pushed from internal part of each tubular screen with a squeegee like tool. Evenly distributed through tiny mesh color upon color.
