Hemangioma update: Luca’s doctors decided they wanted to be proactive because of the placement of his hemangioma. On Thursday afternoon, we got the call that a bed was open at #chopphiladelphia and to bring him down to start administering propranolol. Propranolol is a beta blocker and is used to treat cardiac patients; however in 2014 the FDA approved it to treat hemangiomas in children over 45 weeks of age and have seen great success in shrinking and stopping the growth of hemangiomas with its use. Many doctors will start children on propranolol outpatient, but because of Luca’s prematurity and only being 2 weeks adjusted (42 weeks), the doctors believed it should be done inpatient. During our stay, nurses checked Luca’s heart rate, blood pressure, and any signs of lethargy or low blood sugar to make sure his body was reacting well to the drug. Luca will continue to get propranolol 3 times a day through his first birthday.
