So my bf just came back from Mexico with a terrible case of Mantu-zuma's revenge. My poor dumpling! I am equal opportunity dumpling lover. Savory, juicy, spicy, porky, and Chinese may well top my criteria, but I'll take 'em any way I can get 'em. Vegan Tibetan chive-filled momos? Why, I thought you'd never ask! Lamb-stuffed Georgian khinkali? Don't mind if I do. Polish potato & cheese pierogies? What do you think? And sweet Russian cherry varenikis for dessert? Um... yes, please! Point is, I loveee (sarcasm fully intended) dumplings from across the globe. So it's no wonder I was drawn to this Smorgasburg stand, hawking Afghani mantu. These steamed beef & onion filled beauties spoke to my dumpling adoring soul. They won my ❤ in large part due to the cooling, subtly garlic-imbued yogurt sauce and dollops of split pea korma, jacked up with tomato & caramelized onion, that accompanied them. But make no mistake. The actual dumplings were a delight, too! The name of this stand is Nansense, which beguiled me for obvious reasons. My partner-in-crime chatted with someone who may have been the proprietor, and he was similarly charming. Apparently, per deets I looked up later on, he was born to Afghani refugees in my beloved Queens, where I *think* he still lives. I don't know about you, but I love learning the background stories of people who feed me deliciousness such as this.
