Meet the Whale Shark (Rhincodon typus), the largest fish in the sea but by far the gentlest giant around! Along with their massive size, Whale Sharks are also known to have a long lifespan, estimated to be 70 to 100 years, which allows them to reach their greatest length of 40 feet over a lifetime! However, we may see fewer and fewer of these aged giants due to threats from legal and illegal fishing, entrapment in fishing gear, and collisions with boats, according to @IUCN . An article in @nationalgeographic explains how their population has more than halved over the last 75 years due to these impending threats which has lead to their subsequent addition to the endangered species list alongside many other shark species. Though this all sounds bleak, their is still hope on the horizon with organizations like @conservationorg who are tracking Whale Shark movements to better understand their behavior, feeding habits and habitat, as well as @nakaweproject who are protecting sharks from shark finning through educational campaigns and passionate story telling. As individuals we can help these gentle giants by reducing, reusing and recycling plastics (they end up swallowing tons of the stuff sine they're filter feeders!) and using your voice to inspire your friends, family and even strangers to make little changes that add up to one big movement towards sustainability over time! Keep protecting what you love friends _______________________________ #whaleshark #whalesharks #whalesharkwatching #shark #sharksofinstagram #savesharks #whiteshark #helpsavesharks #saveoursharks #painting #sharks #sharklove #sharklover #sharkdiver #sharkdiving #sharkconservation #sharkart #scuba #sharkdive #sharkdiving #protectsharks #helpprotectsharks #savesharks #oceanlover #sharklife #florida #scubadive #sharkresearch

A few of my friends and I headed out this weekend to photograph and film the health of the galapagos shark population off Oahu’s North Shore. Nearly a dozen individuals showed up in our two hours in the water and it was saddening to see how many sharks had hooks and leaders in their jaws. Luckily most looked to be rusting away and should fall out soon. A few other individuals had odd shaped bites and gashes taken from them. Hope to see these guys healthy again in the coming months. Thank you Captain @sava_bien___ and to @marina_oceanlove for taking us out to sea! #savesharks #oceana #galapagossharks #underwater #nauticam #canonusa #waihana #sharkweek #discoversharks #apnea #freediving #conservation #protectsharks #ocean #protectourplanet

We have been made aware of a video of a beached Tiger Shark that was shot to death that was circulated on social media. It is evident from the comments in the video, as well as, the discussions that followed the social media post that more education about regulations regarding sharks in The Bahamas and shark behavior are needed. The Bahamas National Trust (BNT) would like to use this opportunity to share some critical information about sharks and the regulations governing them in The Bahamas. In 2011, sharks became fully protected in The Bahamas, turning the 243,000 square miles of the Bahamian archipelago into a shark sanctuary. It is illegal to catch or harm any shark in The Bahamas. The Bahamas is known as the Shark Diving capital of the world. It’s estimated that Sharks bring in around $114 million dollars every year in The Bahamas. People from around the world travel to The Bahamas to dive with sharks. Tiger sharks are at the top of the bucket list for many people, and places like Tiger beach in Grand Bahama are famous for their populations of these large predators. The Tiger Shark (Galeocerdo cuvier) is a large predatory shark found in tropical and temperate waters around the world. Mature Tiger sharks have virtually no predators, but like most shark species, they are heavily fished, both commercially and recreationally. Reduction in their numbers comes mainly from targeted and accidental catch in fisheries. Their reputation as a species that attacks people (which is very rarely) makes them a target of ‘population control’ efforts in some places, a practice that is not supported, especially not in The Bahamas where they are fully protected by law. As a result, their numbers are declining, and they have been listed by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as Near- threatened. Like many sharks, these apex predators play a crucial role in maintaining the balance of marine life that humans benefit from, especially in The Bahamas. We are working aggressively, with the help of the relevant authorities to have all parties involved in the incident prosecuted. Photo by @johngarzaphoto

Happy World Oceans Day! Sharks have been swimming in the world’s oceans for more than 400 million years, but today, #shark populations across the world are being decimated, every year we lose more than 100 million sharks to shark fin soup, cosmetics, and supplements that have scientifically been proven to have no health benefits. These activities are putting some of our favorite shark species - like the Scalloped Hammerhead above - in danger of extinction! To help save #sharks, I'm supporting @lushcosmetics to raise awareness on the vital role sharks play in maintaining healthy oceans as a keystone species because we know that as top predators, sharks help to manage healthy ocean ecosystems, including seagrass beds and coral reefs! Without sharks, the ocean would be unthinkably empty. You can support LUSH in their mission to save sharks by purchasing a "shark fin Soap" bar made from all natural, vegan ingredients, with 100% of the proceeds going towards supporting the launch of the Rob Stewart Sharkwater Foundation, to help continue his work and legacy in the preservation of sharks and healthy oceans. To support this cause you can purchase "Shark fin Soap" at the link in my bio!
